ixnys-- this isn't a contest

Bro, you've put up half a dozen threads about which is "the best" for specific applications... the answer to your query? There are at least 10, and in many cases more than 10 units that are all "best" in each and every application.

What will be "best" for one engineer may be "worst" for another, and "OK" for another, and "shitty" for another, or an "it depends" for yet another.

There are no 'bests'... there are things we find aestheticly pleasing in an application, but all of these judgements are juxtaposed by the other hardware and tones that were applied in the other applications that comprise a piece of music.

This shit is entirely interrelated, and your questions are impossible to answer.

As a pimp I could steer you towards some excellent hardware that woud serve the additional purpose of putting food on the family's table... or you could dive in and try a bunch of this stuff and make up your own mind on what is best for your applications.

It's all very "engineer/project" specific.

Best of luck with the search... just realize, there are no rules.

Thank you so much Mr Fletcher.
I was thinking a few hours ago how these "best" posts really undermine the great spirit of this forum. Let's try and keep the level of discussion a bit higher than this.
No harm intended.

cheers

shit, I can get better results out of my tascam portastudio's mic pre's than any of you can with all your over-rated expensive gear. Also, my old radio shack tape recorder with the built in mic is the super duper bestest preamp for heavy metal guitars. Doesn't work well with female vocals, though.fuuck

If you are tuned to open D major, use the Vintech X73, if you are tuned to D minor use the X73i.

There realy are times when Fletcher is 'the BEST'. Nothing wrong with asking questions Ixnys and some of your threads have interesting views in them for sure. but Fletcher has a point when he says that one simply cannot answer things like 'the BEST'.

There is no such thing .... hell I think Protools is 'the BEST' but lots of people dfegad on it.

'the BEST' is what works for you and what at the end of the day get's it done.

Now go on with your never ending quest .... read / post / observe / learn / ask about gear .... and at the end form your own opinion based on what YOU think ... not what others tell you to think. That's what these forums are all about ..... and maybe most importantly ... share your own experiences / opinions on gear with us so we can do the same.

And if you feel realy bad about this thread .... just be a slut a buy some good looking piece of gear just for the fun of it ... and come back and tell us about it to make us jealous ... hell .... it's the hollidays coming up ....

Alright guys, sorry for all the "best" posts. I know there is no best, I've said in replies to some other posts that it is sometimes just easier to say that. I was getting annoyed always having my salesclerk reccomend to me what was good and now after finding this forum, it's helped me to reseach a lot more of what is out there. Right now I'm researching and gathering information about pre's based upon suggestions from this forum. I've done a lot of reseach on this forum to see what mic pre's are getting good reputations. For example, I don't own any nevish type of gear and it seems that a pre like the Great River MP2-NV has always been suggested when someone is looking for a great preamp. Although I did create so many threads for different parts of my drum kit, it was just so I could get more focused replies and see what pre's were being suggested a lot.

So of course there is no best and each piece of gear has its purpose, but I'm not gonna go out and buy right now 18 preamps. As I said, I was looking for at least 13 so I'm trying to find a collection of 13 preamps that will work well with the genre I record in and can be interchangeable between instruments and the rest of the kit to give me a nice pallete of sounds. So even though the posts may be a little irritating (I apologize), they really have been helping me. My biggest mistake was putting "BEST PRE" in the title.

But at least now I will have a better knowledge of what preamps are out there and which ones I should take home and compare.

seriously,

which is the best forum for finding the best forum to find the best way to stop all this best posts ...

please put in your order of best to worse, from 1 to 10 or using odd numbers for best and even for worse ...

limit choices to under to 194 as that is the limit of most field mice in the arctic circle where this makes most (or should i say best) sense ...

peace john

was that the best or not???

In defence of Ixnys, at least it wasn't a "Best Preamp that will make me Sound Like A Pro for Under $50". Still, other than the Great River, which seems like a solid decision, what are you thinking about buying? make us drool! David
