what the hell, my gr me1nv acts as a microphone...

someone mentioned earlier on a post about their gr doing some strange things, like they could hear themselves on the speakers when the gr was on.

i too came upon the same problem which i thought did not exist until i decided to push the input to about 3oclock and the speakers on and the daw in record mode with nothing plugged into the gr. i would have never noticed this problem for i usually have the headphones on but decided to leave the speakers on when the guitarist wanted to hear the track when we were mixing.

the gr did not have anything plugged into it and when the guitarist wanted to raise the speaker volume, we started getting feedback and we could hear our own voice.

it seems that the gr becomes a type of mic if you push the input hard. we actually ended up recording us talking when i was bouncing the mix because the output of the gr was still on in the daw.

i dont really know what to do here, is anyone getting the same problem. it seems like i may not be able to push the gr input that hard if i want a clean take. im going to have to find out whether this only happens if nothing is connected to the unit.

this defeats the purpose of pushing the input of the gr for transformer saturation for some flavour when it ends up picking up audio outside.

Some devices behave strangely with nothing plugged into them, as the input may be considered 'open'.

Does it do it with a device patched to the input too?

I suppose some component in there is behaving microphonically. Weird.

Cool idea! Now that's what I call thinking outside of the box. Now we just need to find out what's going on inside the box. Some kind of ghost maybe? Real "phantom-power". I'm on a roll....sorry...it's late and I'm bored. I'll get out of here now.

I'm sure it won't with something pluged into it.

I agree with experimenting though.

If you get close and sing into it does it get louder?

Try plucking some strings right up next to it.

Maybe Great River should charge extra for this new feature you found?

It's probably because the transformers in the unit are microphonic. There was a thread a while back about the opposite effect occuring - someone noticed that the transformers were "singing" when audio was passed through them at a high level. I did a search but I can't seem to find the thread.

It's nothing to worry about, but obviously you will need to be aware of it and shut yer yap if you're recording the output of the preamp.

ME-1NV's tend to "sing" more than thier two channel counterparts because of the way the transformer is mounted in to the chassis. [EDIT] After talking to Dan about your situation, I'd like to you try and recreate the situation. I'm guessing you left a microphone plugged into the unit and this is the source of your bleed. If you end up being able to make the unit behave this way again, please PM me, and we'll make sure to get the situation figured out.
