I apologize if this isn't okay for geekslutz. I'm looking to rent a varispeed unit for my A80 2 track for a day or so. I just let one go on ebay because I thought I wouldn't need it. Ugg. I do. If anyone in the NYC area has one they could part with for a day I would appreciate it. You can call me at (718) 788-5777

Brad and I had talked about how easy it would be to build one and whoever gets around to it first was going to build two of them. One for him and one for me, I haven't done it yet. The I/O is on the back of the deck, shouldn't be too hard to get the right resistors and a pot connected. Hell, it might even be in the manual. Have you tried the Studer list?

I looked in the manual today but the schematic wasn't in there. I wasn't sure if it was active or passive.I've never opened one up. If it's passive it shouldn't be too hard to knock off. I don't even need it calibrated with the numerical readout. I'll try the studer list.

I just bought the one on Ebay and the seller is in NYC - if you want to pick it up from him and use it, then ship it to me, that's fine. Lemme know.

From my recollection, the standard capstan reference card in an A80 will only allow a very limited range of speed adjustment via. a pot connected to the control socket on the rear of the machine. To achieve a wide range of speed adjustment, it is necessary to replace the capstan reference card with an alternative "vari-speed" version. The standard card has a large silver-cased inductor in the centre of the circuit board, whereas the "vari-speed" card just has normal components all over it. The vari card is not as stable at the "nominal" speed position, so if you are not altering the basic speed, it's best to have the standard card installed. BG |
