Thread Starter | U47 Pattern Microphone on Drums
Hi everybody,
I was wondering if anybody had tried using a U47 pattern mic on drums before? Now this question refers to any replica or original in this ballpark.
I am curious of the results people have had from using this mic for various applications around a kit.
Any positive experiences?

single over snare plus eqiudistant[2&1/2 stickLengtn] 2nd over right shoulder
spaced pair overheads
room mono
stereo spaced room pair
low behind drummer..
up a stone chimney..
inside an empty leslie cab

Thanks RoundBadge,
-m | Good micsthumbsup I just scored a Wunder CM-7 as well
Great..lot's of possibilities there..try messing with hitting comps for room crush,etc..
use one as a 'Wild mic"[anything goes]:
put one of the mics in a really weird place....garbage can..empty bass cab, under a counter,fireplace,chimney,hallway..bathrroom,bathtub..down/up a stairwell[usually gets way more interesting with a lotta compression]..then blend back into the whole drum mix
Your in very good shape..Go crazy/have fun |

I'll give you a hint... using a 47 is no magic bullet for getting a drum sound... a great drummer and a good set of drums in a good sounding room is a magic bullet for getting great drum sounds but a U-47 copy, clone, look alike, act alike, wannabee, could be seen to be like from the chrome in the photo ain't the fvckin' secret. Can be a help if you have the other magic bullet recipes [drummer, drums, room] in order but it can't do magic.

For an idea, listen to Talk Talk's album "Laughing Stock". Drums were tracked with a single U47. Of course, the talented Phil Brown recorded it and Talk Talk was an amazing band performing in a more than likely amazing studio.

I read about them moving the kit around on a wheeled riser until they found the right spot, then moved the mic around to best capture the drum kit. Pretty amazing sounding album and one of my all time favourites.

I like the 67 on drums WAY better.
Behind the drummer's right ear. The sh*t.

When I had a U47 longbody it was THE mono (omni) room mic I'd use. I had a very long chamber where the U47 always sat... perfect every time... even if the drummer was "lame". The room sounded great thru that mic.
I'd also have close mics to mix in, of which - if the drummer was awful - would become processed to all hell and be an attack as opposed to the main drive.
Now, I use a pair of Neumann Gefell CMV563's (M55K caps) for a better binaural-mix "smear/room" drum sound.

I have other mics, it's just that I'm trying to cover the drums with 7-8 tracks, which is ample amount, but I have to think about the options available concerning channels.
47 patterned mics being large and condenser (and what I have currently) cover a good deal of ground. For the most part they seem to be a nice option to overheads versus ribbons or pencil mics. Either that or a way to maybe more than one tom with one channel.
