I have Phoenix and use it all the time.

I've never once thought of it as a tape emulator. Maybe that's what it was designed to be, but I just use it because I like what it does. But it doesn't sound like tape to me.

EXACTLY! The Phoenix sounds NOTHING like tape. The McDSP is closer, but still, not that close at all.

The Phoenix sounds like a big dithering phase manipulator to me.

That is the truth. A 2" Studer is the ultimate compressor. Just think of it this way, for appox. 8k for the Studer + 10k for 2" 16-track JFR Electronics, you have 8 channels of the best damn compression ever for 18k. That is like $1125 a channel.

I know this is the high end and we are all going to say that nothing can compare to actual tape BUT the McDSP analog channel 1+2 when used in combination definitely get close. It's all about how you use them. I find myself putting them on every channel of the mix sometimes (definitely on anything that is a virtual instrument or a sample).

I can give them a glowing review without a doubt. This is the reason that we picked up the line AFTER being a user. The support and customer service is excellent as well. Maybe get a few different plug-ins but I would definitely pick these up.

Good thing you make a living doing audio and not math. You're off by half.

$2250 a channel for 8.

If you go to 16 channels, then your math is right--$1125 per channel.

Best compressor

The Studer A80 RC MKII 1/2" 2 track is one of THE best mix down machines AND you use it to record and/or bounce tracks for the above mentioned great compression sound!

Man, all I know is Analog Channel more than one or two times in a mix starts to annoy the hell out of me. I think if your tracks need that much of it, there's something wrong from the get-go.

Nice. I never thought to use both!!!! Going to check that out tonight. I can't say I liked them all that much on their own, especially the tape version, but using both sounds interesting.

I work with both formats all the time, and I still use the massey "tape head" plugin on certain tracks.

Here's a trick. Set Analog Channel 1 to the preset Console 2. Then in the insert right below that set Analog Channel 2 to the preset Swiss 1 and switch the dropdown that says Swiss to USA A and then turn down the bump until there's just a slight bump (set the rolloff to 82 for kick and bass, and set the rolloff to 100 for everything else that doesn't need the ultra low-end).

I put them on every channel of DFHS (I have everything separated into separate aux tracks) and it brings it all to life. Quite impressive.
