1176 - silver w/blue stripe/black face(ln)/silver face(ln) w/red off switch

when people talk about the silver 1176 are they most often talking about the first 1176 or the last 1176? i'm aware the black face is most popular...i'd like to hear from anybody who uses one of the silver face units...which do you use? how do you like it? do you have a black face as well and if so do you find them usefull for the same things?

The silver face with the blue stripe are pre black faece...I'm pretty sure. True UA and not Urei. The typical silver are the later Urei units. If I'm wrong...someone correct me, that's just how I remember it.

Used to be a Silver and blue hear, but I didn't get to use it enought to remember what it sounded like. I don't mind the silver ones, but the black seem to sound a bit firmer in the low mid.

Old original blue stripe. They are the shiznit and the silver with the red knob really have none of the sound and mojo of the blue stripe. The blue strip is smooth and clear but at times a bit noisy and the black face's are a bit more agressive in the mid range.

Take all these comments with a grain of salt since most black face 1176's haven't been recapped and each one sounds different now days. Many of them sound like crap compared to one that has been maintained.

Do a search on 1176 or blue stipe 1176. I have posted in a number of threads about them....

would you then say the one with the red knob is better or worse then the UA reissue?

Well. Ok. Here it goes in short form. I have a blue stripe rev b that sounds unlike any other 1176 I have ever used. It is just fantastic and I will probably have my kids put it in my coffin when I die. It is priceless to ME. I also have a Purple Audio MC-76 that sounds almost exactly like the rev D black face 1176 pair that I used to have. (The same pair now resides in a local studio and have never been recapped and to me sound like total shit now. See my earlier post above) I also have a Universal Audio 2-1176 and to finally answer your question it sounds very similar to the Rev g/h silver 1176's that your are asking about. It is a bit smoother than the older Silver/Red button units. If it were me I would probably buy a new reissue over a silver/red button unit just because of the age. The great thing is there are plenty of people around who can fix these units and are quite reputable.

The silver 1176's and the 1178 used to be quite inexpensive on ebay but now pretty much all 1176 compressors are going for top dollar.

Good luck,
Michael Greene

I'm trying to figure out how old these two UREI 1176 silver faces are .. am I to understand that they were the last 1176's (they don't have a red knob or blue strip). I recently had one re-capped and plan to have the other done soon. Which 'era' were they sold thru, is my question. 80's ? 90's ? Anyone know?

1176 dates

Hi,

Check the printing on the power and output transformers, these are usually dated.
