AKG C24

Hi there,

I'm looking to find someone who can build me a PSU (220V) for an AKG C24.

I'm under a bit of pressure as my original contact has let me down and I need it for a session coming up next month.

It would also help if the tech/shop could service and over haul my mic also.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

Thanks,

I presume you mean Korby Audio in Nashville?

I've tried them already and they sold the last one they had two weeks before I called em !

I was told I could try calling back but never bothered after the girl I spoke to asked around but she sounded really doubtful of finding one for me.

I'm on Irish time so can't call them til later this evening but will give them a try again.

Drefahl is the man. I can see him building a supply in the alotted time you want, but a cleaning and an overhaul might be wishful thinking as most mic techs are booked well in advance.

Not a fan of the mic shop power supplies...

Call Steve Firlotte of Inward connections- he can make a pretty sweet power supply. I've used several built by him and designed by the guy that did Vac Rac. The mics never sounded as good...

Thanks a million guys.

If only I had come to you three months ago when I originally started to source this psu.

It has been so annoying to have been promised one thing and then realised another.

Why can't people be straight with you. If it takes four months, it takes four months, but don't tell me it will take three weeks and then leave me hanging !!

Peter seems like the man with the plan and reckons he can turn it around pretty quick.

He is German, so apart from sending my mic closer to its original home, I have no doubt he is as efficent as every other German dealer/tech/engineer I've worked with before.

While we are on the subject, anyone C24 owners fancy sharing some tales of use ?

I used one extensively... I used to co-own one but I ended up splitting with my partner and getting the Studer instead. I do miss that custom C-24. A stock original C-12 or C-24 is a little light in the bottom, even after you replace the old, burnt-out tantalum coupling caps.

I love that mike, nicest and smoothest rising high end in the business, great presence on vocals, and very nice as a simple stereo Blumlein main group mike.

Peter is a really nice guy and has refurbed a couple mics for me and I have bought a few from him. His power supplies are first-rate and very quiet and bomb proof. That is great that he can turn it around for you in the time you need.

I know Some people have all the luck but this time.... for once..the lucks mine !!

I'm still getting over the fact that I missed out on a 24 channel custom 50 series Neve console, fully loaded with 1066s and 2254s.

The "DEALERS" got to it and gave the owners a "Trade in" on a HD PT rig Little did they know !!

So this was one of those good gets that comes along once in a blue moon !

I record everything from Jazz to Rock and Roll so I'm sure this mic will get plenty of good use.

I'd love to say I'll be thinking of you, but I'm sure I'll be too busy marvelling at this gem, to keep you in mind

Sorry to dig up such an old thread - but I was wondering if there was ever a replacement for the AKG C24?

If not - what would compare to this unit?

Just morbid curiosity.

Thank you.

After the C24, AKG went solid state. The C422 and then the C426. Both great stereo mics- use and love both. Both sound completely different than a C24, though.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Will look into Tracy Korby, as well as the C422 & C426. Interesting stuff.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply to this.

Take care.

C24 Service

Eddie Ciletti recently rebuilt my C24. It was featured in Mix Magazine several months ago. Eddie works in Minneapolis and he is fantastic. He has a regular column in Mix. He is very busy but will tell you if he cannot work on your mic. Sending a mic as valuable as a C24 far away to be repaired is frightening. I have had two lesser mics get "lost" by carriers. Insurance is very expensive and money will not easily replace a C24 if it gets "lost". Good luck!
The C24 is in a class by itself - low end for days and a sweet clarity that is unmistakable. I use it on piano, drum OH, room mic, violin - in XY, MS or Blumlein. I also have the C422 and the small diaphragm C34. The C422 is similar to two 414s on a stick and the C34 is similar to two 451s on a stick - it has smaller diaphragms. The transient response of the C34 makes it ideal as a drum OH or a percussion mic. I have never used the Studio Projects LSD but it looks like a worthwhile mic to have if you need a "Combi" mic similar to the AKG C series. It is reasonably priced and seems like an excellent value.

Just besides - I'm selling an original AKG N24B power supply for the C24 - it is like new and probably never used! If you're interested PM me your offer.

The C34 is indeed a fantastic microphone... Been a big fan of it on a number of sources for years- from drums, to piano to acoustic guitar and string section work...

The LSD is a good mic, but IMO nowhere near the quality of the AKG offerings. I believe the 422/426 and C34 are among the last great mics that AKG made. Nothing they currently make comes close to the functionality of these.

I did send you a mail.

Regarding my PM - I've been in contact through PM on this board quite often. Just checked it once more and it's working. (Clicked on "Christof" and on "Send a private message...").

Best regards,
Christof
