Compressor for the 2Buss :: Which Is Your Fave??

Sorry for revisiting a subject that has been discussed a million times here, but I thought a poll would be interesting to see what people who have the choice are using. Forgive me for not including several models.... it's just a silly poll, after all.

what would be fascinating to me would be a second multiple choice list where you indicate which compressors you have experience with. so many people on this board are smaller studios and/or homebrew cats, and their favorite mix comp may be the only one they've ever owned or used. not that this invalidates their opinions, it just puts them into a different perspective.

in a former life i specialized in statistics, so i'm always fascinated by the collection of data and what the information gathered actually indicates. hey, at least i'm not into role playing games. not anymore .

you are so right about this.

i thought about including a disclaimer of sorts on the post asking for only people who have the experience personally with the majority of these compressors to answer. but that would be un-democratic and hell, even i would be disqualified from voting on my own poll!!

so it's an imperfect system; i just hope people will vote only if they have really used the compressor they are voting for; not just to vote for what you have "heard" is good, etc....

Hi Lindell.
Could you share a bit on this new approach? what are the Pros and cons you have experienced...or any info you think pertinent?....are you using more compression elsewhere?..or not?
Thanks!

In regard to the original question, I believe that you need all of them and some more (or maybe not)....that if you have to deal with very diverse sources. In my experience the sound (color, Dynamics, Style) of the Tracks/Mix will dictate (...if you use one) wich is the most proficient.
But again...there should be no fixed parameters for ART. At least that's what I believe.
In my last jobs, the RED3 has been my choice...though is not on the List

i guess i missed this because i haven't heard from many people with experience with it (being new and such). i also left out plenty of other good choices; i'm not discriminating; there were just 10 poll options and too many good units.

do you have/use a 755?? tell me about it! i would love to hear what you think of it and how great it is!

I picked the SSL G series compressor because I think they sound amazing.

Then again, that might be because every time I've used one, I was mixing on an SSL desk from tape...

I picked the STC-8 because I love it's versatility and the Alan Smart C2, because it sits on my buss from the day I bought it!

I admit that I did not have the possibility to work with all the units you have listed. I am sure nearly noone had this amazing chance!

I also have experiences with the Ted Fletcher P10 whichs compressor can be used for busswork and mastering very well!

Just got a great hint: Smart C2 for basic compression, followed by the Fletcher to limit the peaks! Works incredible good!

I was the other guy in the room (Mark had to catch a flight back to the islands), here: Production workshop

For the record, I've never used the outboard SSL G, the 160L or the GML. Michael picked the STC-8 (as I predicted when he described what he wanted in a comp) and I LOVED the Smart, most of all. The C2 was exactly what I was looking for in a 2 buss mix comp.

YMMV

of the compressors in my place, it's GML 8900, SSL 384, Avalon L44 or nothing. depends. no favorite. if i had to pick one, GML 8900 because it does different things well.

I have 1 Allan Smart C2, 1 old ssl 384G, 1 old ADR compex and waves ssl buss compressor.
I love the sound of my C2 it makes a wonderful compression on trancients and softly pumps the releases in a very musical way.
But on mine, when I compared against my old ssl, I've found tha C2 takes away some low frequencys that ssl don't. So now Im using ssl on buss and C2 for drums (except kick).
Rob Jacobs told me when he was in my studio 1 year ago that he mixed U2's "Rattle and hum" through ADR compex. So I give it a try and found it very colored, I think it fits on some especific kind of music.BTW, waves ssl sounds terrific for me.

Best regards.
Armando Avila.

The list is missing the Vintech 609CA (which is different in tone than the 33609 and a bit more flexible functionally), Crane Song Trakkers, Buzz Audio SOC1.1, Roll Music RMS 755, and Pendulum OCL-2 all of which rock.

i seriously considered listing the TRAKKERs which i have used and love but have never had 2 for use on the 2buss. i know a few MEs that use TRAKKERs on the 2buss. it just came to: i have only 10 options and 1 Crane Song product is all i chose to list.

i love the Buzz Audio stuff but don't know much about the SOC1.1 except that it must be good because Tim knows his stuff.

i didn't list the RMS 755 because i haven't heard from many people who have actually used it.

the Pendulum, Vintech and Focusrite Red 3 were omitted only because there is a maximum of 10 options for any poll. many people will say for sure that one of those 10 slots belonged to the Red 3. i am sure some people will say "where's the Daking"??.....

again this is just a silly poll that is obviously flawed; i listed units that either i have used or that just have me the most interested at the moment.

I have used them all or have owned just about all of them at different times one time or another.

I can equivocally say right now i am using none of the above.

Do tell then -- are you using something different or nothing at all?

These days its a Blue 230 or its nada(once in a Blue moon i run the 230 into a Vari-Mu).

I still own a few of the comps on the list but they get other uses for mixing duties.

Thanks jd... I appreciate the kind words. Out of the 10 choices, we sell 6 of them... They are all great pieces, but the C2 is my favorite for 2buss.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

Pendulum ES-8 or 6386

I know, I know... they all couldn't be on the list, but that's the closest to a Fairchild 670.

I use the old grey SSL 384...but that 6386 is always redy to kick in. Tough choice. Quality problem.

Mmm... I think waves made a decent and very honorable work, when I said terrific, it was because on some tests I did, the waves responded very similar to my ssl (I mean, it responded similar, but tone department is another story). If you have to do some fast mix (in the box) its a good option to get that kind of sound with just a few clicks (and an Ilok and about $1000 dls).
Best regards.

What about more than 1 compressor on the mixbuss? For example STC-8 -> 1968?
Does anybody do that?
