Pictures Of Mic'ed Up Pianos In The Studio

Just posted in the Pictures Of Mic'ed Up Drum Kits In The Studio topic here at Gearslutz. Thought we could use one for pianos.

I recently recorded some jazz sessions in a really nice home project studio. More info at The Listening Sessions Meets Jazzooo

Kawai grand piano: a pair of ADK TL's set on omni to Millennia HV-3D and an ADK Commemorative Edition running through a John Hardy M-1.

Here's a shot of Doug "Jazzooo" Robinson at his Kawai grand. Also to the left are two of the Azola basses brought in for the sessions.

finally a topic I where can contribute!

It's a good thing my 19y/o brother plays piano and is stage manager at the local Civic Center Auditorium! We tracked piano for all our songs in one night, much to my amazement. And upon review, I had to edit very little. Also, he learned most of the songs on the spot.

Yamaha C7 close mic'd with Coles 4038s through Earthworks 1024 pres. The U47 over the left shoulder ran through a 1070. We also put a matched pair of U87s spread wide as distant room mics through API 3124s. iZ Corp. Nyquist converters were used. Engineer: John Shipp

Pairs of ribbons are what I use on piano almost exclusively these days for solo piano recordings. (In this pic there are 2 pairs cause I was shooting them out against each other. I only used one of the pairs in the mix. Didn't use the 92's on the outside of the piano, they were aenimic out there.)

Kind of a bizzare figure-of-8 extravaganza, but it sounds fantastic in use. It's something that I've ended up using on the last 3 solo piano albums I've recorded. Fletcher seems to think I'm trying to redefine the Blumlein technique, but I like to think of it as using my ears and being creative. If you look close, you can see that the front mic(s) are firing L and R and NOT up at the lid and down at the strings. The rear mic(s) is firing down towards the strings and up towards the lid - both mics obviously fig 8's.

Links to sound clips and the entire shootout here. More pics as well if you're interested:

Ribbon Madness....Some Comparisons

I won't spoil it and tell you whether we ended up using the Coles or the Oktavamod 205's. Both mics sounded outstanding.
