I am an up and coming producer singer songwriter, who wants to know which is the best mic pre for that american r&b sound when recording vocals think usher, ray j, mario, marques huston, chris brown and tyrese. In fact what would be an excellent vocal chain. (e.g) Mic>Pre amp>Comp>Eq. REMEMBER R&B MUSIC, NOT ROCK OR POP.

Mic: Sony C800G or Peluso 251

Preamp: Neve 1073 or similar (Brent Averill 1073, Aurora Audio GTQ2mkIII)

Compressor: La2a or 1176 type compressor (purple MC77, Summit TLA100a, Tube Tech CL1B)

EQ: Avedis E27, Pultec, Focusrite ISA110

As always, it depends on the vocalist... but this would be a great start and very typical of the music you are doing.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

Tony, I was kind of surprised to see you place the peluso 251 right up there with the sony.. Just cause the sony has been a long accepted standard and the peluso is fairly new..

NOT to doubt your judgement, and i'm TOTALLY NOT trying to start a peluso vs. xyz thread.. just wondering if you've found, in your personal experience, that mic to be a modern staple of this style.

As for the original question, love it or hate it, i think the avalon 737 has found it's way into many r&b vocal chains and is worth a look.. although a dream chain would indeed be the c800-1073-1176+LA2A thumbsup

The 800 to a 1073 pre is not a real winning combination to me. The 251 is a nice mic and for the price cant be beat! I tried to tell people about the 251 for a while but when peluso came up the 2247LE was the mic everyone talked about. I still think the 22 251 is a nicer mic than the 2247LE.

I don't know about the 22 251, but the 2247LE into an Avalon 737sp is a super smooth combo for R&B.
