Knock me over with a feather

M-A got in the first batch of the Portico 5033's on Thursday so I had them throw one into my room to give a run around the block... well I was cutting some basics least night and the snare head was definitely on it's last leg so I looked around the room for an EQ to put some snap back into it... tried the Mini-Massive... nice, not 100% perfect... tried the Lil Freq., also nice but the low mid I was looking for wasn't quite creamy enough though the "snap" was perfect... long story short, after about 3 or 4 different tries I remembered the 5033 was in the room... put it on the snare drum buss, added a little 'snap' and brought up some extra 'whack' and basicly fell in love right then and there!!

I haven't tried it on legato source material yet... but it's the best EQ I have EVER experienced for percussive sounds!! ...or at least it smelled that way last night. We got two more takes before we had to change the snare head... the kik head went about an hour later and unfortunately we didn't have a 24" kik head in inventory so the session wrapped early [not even the 5033 was able to save it... on the one hand I was bummed because we had to wrap early, on the other hand I was psyched because we wrapped early and I could go home!!!].

100%

I haven't purchased the unit yet... just playing with/testing it. If/when the studio buys the unit then we'll pay what we paid for everything else... either dealer cost or what I negotiate directly with the MFG.

This is one of the main reasons that the studio is NOT open for public bookings... while our rent is a scant $3.15 per sq. ft. and our equipment is either stuff I've collected over many years or stuff I purchased at a serious discount via my M-A connections... we have a very low overhead on the joint... so we could actually charge like $50/hr. [and make a nice profit] for frankly one of the best equipped rooms in New England with a tracking room like is like 57' x43' w/ 16ft. ceilings, made of brick and wood with steel beams and so much shit lying about that there is like no reverb time in the place [think the sound of Olympic and you're starting to get the idea]... the fact of the matter is that if the studio were open commercially it would compete with M-A's clients which in my opinion would be a bad thing... and I really enjoy having a well equipped room at my beck and call without having to worry about scheduling time...

The room is pretty much for my needs/work and is definitely "invitation only". There are more than a couple of gigs I've had in the last few months where I left the building to go engineer in somebody else's room... not because my room wasn't better, because the band wasn't good enough to get to come into "my house".

No shit.

Hello Fletcher,
How would you compare the 5033 to the GR EQ-2NV (or even the MEQ-2NV)? Both sound characteristic and usability (versatility)?
thanks!

About as you could compare and contrast a Range Rover to a BMW 7 Series.

So Fletcher....
are you still loving this EQ or what, any new discoveries good or bad??
I'm looking for something to add to my tone controls,
and the 5033 and Avedis e27 is looking very tempting right now.
Can you compare them at all? Can any one else chime in.....

Thanks
AA.

Been putting the Avedis E27 to the test and it's a very impressive EQ. Easy to over do it because it swings =/- 16dB on the pot, but a little goes a very long way. Big, smooth, crystal clear sound from this baby.

No, I've only seen the RND in the studio, but never used it...

The E27 low end is great... it's big and smooth, with a nice coloration at the fundamentals. The 560 is a nice EQ, but it doesn't really compare with the E27. A better comparison would be the 550A. Picture the 550A with twice as many frequencies, better adjustability, and more pleasing harmonic distortion.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

C'mon Tony... be clear about it, you've only seen the RND stuff in our studio... but you are always welcome to bring the Avedis stuff by so we can play with them next to each other... bounce some of your stuff to disc in the form of "Broadcast Wave Files" and we can get down with the stuff over a 40 and a blunt.... doing more than the cursory "bullshit compare and contrast" and really using both in a variety of applications. Might not be the ultimate pimp quote expedition... but it might yeild some insight as to the best applications for both units [pimp knowledge is so much better than pimp hype].

As for the RND line of toys... I've been loving it. A pair of the 5 band EQ's is now on the top of the short list of stuff to buy for '07... the mic pre and compressor too. I just have to get a "CMG" [cash money gig] through the door and they're as good as assets... the bitch will be figuring out what goes from the racks so they can stay.
