Recorded sound quality will always be more important than anything you can do after the event. Spend your money on the best mics and preamps, then think about mastering a lot later, perhaps rent a mastering facility when you have a great recording first.

Unfortunately, plenty of mastering is about trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear, where recorded sound has been neglected, and this is usually a dead end.

huh?

which is more important, recording or mastering?

The most important thing is knowing how to use your gear. That way whatever you have you can make good music with.'

gearwise... good monitors and good acoustics are top priority.

Hmmm...I'm going to assume that you already know the order of importance here and approach this another way.

So you already have one good mic and a good pre-amp, and now you're trying to decide between another mic or mastering plugs.

I would go for the TC Powercore because I think that would round out your set-up a little better versus buying another mic at this early stage of your journey.Sure, two good mics would widen your tonal-options but you're likely to get more mileage with the plugs that come with the powercore other than just mastering.

Agreed.

Plus you can always re-do a crappy mastering job - and, provided the original recordings are great end up with a great product.

Get everything right up front.

ok, i'll tell you. the best mic for most applications is one hand-tuned by Klaus Heyne just for you.

No. You see, that's where you're wrong. We most certainly do not need to decide this.

Which is just as well, because the chances of doing so (or getting unanimous agreement about *anything* on gearslutz) is zero ±0.0001.

Tony Merrill gets my vote..but yeah, same concept. get it as near perfect as you can in the recording stage. if you present a diamond to the ME, all you need to do is get it cut...however, if you give them cubic zirconia..

and it is ONCE AND FOR ALL...not One's and for all.

I doubt you'd even get agreement here that the mics you've listed are the best from their respective companies. In fact a proportion of board members would be wanting to vote for mics from companies that aren't even on your list.

But if you really want 54 opinions, there's a thread at http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php?t=85371 just waiting for your visit.

You should get the most expensive, sought-after microphone ever made, whatever that is. That way, if it still sucks, you'll know it has to be you.

if i had to personally choose between those mics,
i'd ditch the 87 even if it was a vintage one
(unless i was getting a pair strictly for ac pno and drm oh's).
i'd also ditch the newer c12.

in order of priority, i'd choose:

251
vm1
800g

but that's ME. MY MATERIAL. MY SINGERS. MY ROOM, etc.

YOU, however, need to choose for YOURSELF - because
i have ABSOLUTLEY NO FR8GG8N CLUE WHAT KIND OF SOURCE MATERIAL
YOU'LL BE RECORDING.

get 'em, rent 'em, borrow 'em, TRY THEM OUT.

Good luck.

My VOTE would be "Preamps" and Tracking is the most important, because once you have the sound it does not go away, and you cannot take a bad sound that you have recorded and turn it into a masterpiece. I had a session yesterday and ran some electric guitar ( and i might add it was a small marshall amp non tube) the amp sounded like crap to the ear but the 2022 and a 414 mic almost gave me one of the best guitar sounds ive heard to date, proven fact is you dont need a stack to sound good.
