Recording guitar amp with omni?

In having two 12" speakers on my Fender Twin, I started experimenting with using a mic that has an omni option. By moving the mic around, you can pick up both speakers and get different impressions of the amp. Have anyone else tried this? With the volume of the guitar amp at a acceptable level, I can have the input on the pre low, so it does not pick up much from the room.

I sometimes use a lowly 635a on guitar cab and it can be cool if you add some low end.

figure-8 can also yield some interesting sounds. Escape from the Everday!

Of course...

It can sound great to pick up more of a room and whatever else is going on in it. let it bleed - too much separation in a mix can sound stale, no matter how many reverbs and room simulators you end up using. It's nice to record that moment in time as you hear it. It's good to have options; so you can always throw a cardiod right next to it and record it that way also.

I think it's too easy for us to fall into the pattern of boost this at xxhz and cut at xxkhz, put brand xx three feet from a female vocalist and use this compressor. And what happens is we don't experiement or use our own style and genius. We are sometimes making, what should be creative decisions, in a totally uncreative preset way. I'm not saying you are doing this, just the opposite.

To me, omni is often more natural sounding and presents more creative opportunities than the other patterns.
