A different mic/mic pre question.

So I have about 20 different mics and 6 different preamps. All are, lets say, medium quality. I'm happy with these options for main tracking sessions but I want to get one very good pre and mic for overdubbing. (nothing new here)

The question is:

Which first?

Do I audition great mics through my average pres to pick the mic first

or do I audition great pres with my average mics to get the pre first.

Any thoughts?

Choose the mics you know THE BEST to audition with. Doesn't matter if its high, middle, or low end- if you have heard a '57 thru every type of pre, then it's a good choice. I personally use my preferred vocal tracking mic, a neutral reference condenser mic, and a dynamic of some type to get a sense of a new preamp. If it offers something unusual, I'll bring a good ribbon to see how much gain & character it has.

HI,
Since you are most likely going to use your medium mics with the new good pre as well, I would audition all your mics with a good pre,
then after you get the good pre, get a good mic that works with your good pre.
I can't see you doing the opposite, auditioning medium pres with a good mic?
That's what I would do...I used to be and still am in your same shoes...
I eventualy got an AMEK/Neve dual pre 9098 and it is awesome...makes all my mics sound great...
then i got a nueman mic!@
there are allot of good pre's and mics out there..what ever works for your style./budget.
good luck

Thanks mprooxis

Also good advice, as you say the new pre could make all my mics sound better.

I'm glad I posted this cause I was leaning towards getting the mic first.
Thanks
