I ordered a vintage mic from The Mic Shop and it was garbage. No bass to speak of. I mentioned my dissapointment and another mic was sent. Garbage still, but not quite as shitty. The type of mic I wanted was highly sought after largely for it's original nickel skin and its tube. I made a strong point of ONLY wanting a mic that had these original parts then found out that the membrane was new. I called and asked about it and received a very grumpy message insinutating that I shouldn't have been so picky - that the replacement was done by a very good tech. Who gives a shit?! Then later I was told that the membrane WAS original.

This went back and forth and I STILL don't know what the hell I got. I returned the 2nd mic, then moved my search over to Vintage King and got an absolutely amazing mic, all original, btw.

My experience with the Mic Shop was good....
I bought a U67 from Bill and it sounds great.
Tested it against a friends U67 from Vintage King, they sounded almost same....
both sound wonderful!

Glad to hear you had a positive experience [wish I did!!]... then again you're in Nashville, he's in Nashville... if I had been in Nashville at the time when my beautiful C-12 got ass raped by that philistine I probably would have swung by his place and introduced him to the great game of baseball... via several broken ribs, a couple a fvcked up knees, and depending on the adrenaline level of the moment possible fractured cheek bones and/or elbows... there is just something magical about what a Louisville Slugger 13oz. Fungo Bat can do for both infield practice and anger management [a Fungo Bat is lighter than a baseball bat... you get far better bat speed through the hitting zone when used for disciplinary measures than with a heavier 30-33oz. full on "game bat"].

Wow. Yoga? Sex? Lithium?

I bought a U269 from Bill Bradley after Joe Chiccarelli recommended him, and it's truly gorgeous, one of the best mics I've used.

I'm trying out Bill's custom 47 mic for the first time today... so far, very good. I'm renting my fav. Neumann 47 later today (possibly Monday if they can't get it to me today) and comparing.

man you guys got me nervous. I bought a U67 from Mic Shop and it seems to be a great mic. I am getting a rental to check against. Man this stinks - the industry is so small and when you finally scrape the money together to buy something decent you have to worry about getting scammed. That really stinks.

Well... Andreas at Gefell in Germany turned me on to Bill Bradley saying that he's the person to go to, in the US, regarding my early Neumann/Gefell mics.

I'm sending the mic out tomorrow and I'm not concerned. I guess I won't know until I get it back.

Just make sure your original parts are still in it when it comes back
marking the cap ain't a half bad idea

Wow, that's hardcore, even tho I have 3Meg pics of everything including serial numbers, and I'm requesting the old parts back (all documented -- yeah I don't mess around - no matter who it is).

I'm just surprised, overall that Bill Bradley is panned considering he's one of the top people referred regarding repair/mod's on the BLUE/RED site.

Plus to have Bill recommended by the top service-person at Gefell?, that's enough for me.

I'll honestly post my experience with the whole transaction... I still have no worries.

He's got a C24 that I was thinking of getting - what could I do to protect myself - or should I just look elsewhere?

If you post some inside jpegs of your U67 here i can post some back so you can compare. It is simple to unscrew and look inside try taking off the head grill and unscrew the screws then you can have a look at the capsule, post the jpeg of it here and i will tell you what you need to know

dont take a few disparaging quotes to heart.( i talked to Bill, and he didnt offer what I needed so I looked elsewhere).he stays in business so he must be doing something right. Ive heard plenty of bad things about Korby too, but he seems to be doing fine. people are people. they screw up sometimes. everyone does. i like peter drefahl and tony merill personally, but ive heard people complain about Tony too. everyone has skeletons.

I can't go into specifics - but I did some digging this weekend and I am so discouraged by what I found that I am no longer buying vintage gear. The issues, politics, deception - whether purposeful or not - is just too much especially when so much money is at stake. What a massive dissapointment.

typical worst fears stuff - you trust a tech - buy a mic - find out the capsule is not original, mic's are faked, power supplies are poorly built/dangerous/ too many horror stories to mention from my brief examination (this is not a bradley specific rant - this is just info I have culled from others in the industry). And Frankly since I lack the experience of handling/repairing/certifying capsules etc. I would rather buy equipment from a current manufacturer - at least there is some accountability.

Sure did - we really ran it through its paces. While not identical to my fav. rental 47, it's an excellent microphone and I'm keeping it. I've already cut many vocals on it, female and male, and in the mix stage it does everything I wanted it to. Of all the 47 knock-offs available (though I haven't heard the Wagner) the Bradley mic is darker. I didn't realize that's what I needed until I tried some others in a tracking/mixing situation first. It's kind of impossible to get a bad sound on this mic. It's an instant incredible acoustic guitar sound. I'm really impressed.
