I have gotten some excellent results with my Phoenix DRS-2 (with a BLUE Baby Bottle), and with the Chandler TG-2 (great on dynamics, like my 421 and 441´s).
This is for rock, but I think that it would be nice in an R´n B situation as well.

as if I would ever get tired of saying it ..... my first choice will allways be the avalon ad2022. why? .... because I like straight in your face transparrency. If I switch pre's for lead vocals it's usually because the voice / performer / artists isn't worth to be heard that straight in your face .... and I need to look for colours and tricks and treats to muffle it all up.

Which mic pre totally depends on which mic, IMO. Mics and pres interact like guitars and amps.

Also, the A/Ds, room and monitoring chain impact people's choices. "Thin" A/Ds push people to like "warm" mic/pres, etc.

I have a Rode Classic/ Focusrite 215/ TubeTech CL-1B combo that works very well for me in many cases. It's not any single component, it's the combo on my A/D setup.

My point is, you're likely to be disappointed by just asking about a pre, depending on your mic. Either name your preferred mic, or else consider somebody elses recommended complete combo.

Regards,
Brian T

I use the curtis opre2 -i thought of getting an avalon but the curtis is better clearer and richer (quoting from ghoost).
Curtis technology, look them up, its worth it if you have a good compressor .

OSA MP1A, Daking and Telefunken V672 are at the top of my list based on what I have here. It really depends on what mic I'm using and what the rest of the track is sounding like. I'll use anything.

Even the console.

I got great results from a soundelux 251 through a Daking pre.

In fact, I am going to the bank right now to wire the money to VK to buy them.

Lucky me.

The Amek Channel In A Box from Neve's new PurePath line is quite incredible. Haven't found a mic it can't make magical (course I'm using nice mics).

I use a Soundelux E47 into a UA 6176 and it just sounds so thick and the tubey richness is to die for. I also have a distressor and Manley VariMu if I need to go to that for the compressor instead of the 1176 that's in the 6176. Another mic pre that I have is a TLAudio dual pentode that I never hear discussed on the forum but it sounds good too. Has anyone ever used one?

Samson Wireless Lapel mic -->

Macke XDR preamp -->

Line 6 Pod for compression and EQ -->

ADAT blackface, for that vintage analog feel.

Sometime I'll dump from the ADAT into Acid for serious editing and mixdown work.

The Speck mic pre is very nice. I was very graciously lent one by Fletcher and it was a solid performer for pretty much everything.
