| They all sound great (and look great too! ;-) I haven't played any guitar through mine in a while but this weekend I willl be dinking around. And for those concerned, no, I don't own 2 P-1's, that's a photo editing manipulation. |

Thread Starter | Thankyou all for helping me. I'm going for the Blue, after listing to War's shootout recording I reckon the Blue will fill my needs for now. I will most certainly get more of the A-Design pres later. Thanks again Warren for your recordings. Nick |

| I have a P-1 that I absolutely love on everything I have tried EXCEPT acoustic guitar. Awesome on snare, thumpin' on kick, lucious on vocals, bodacious on bass and near perfect on electric guitar. A sax player I had in last month went nuts over the sound of his horn thru the P-1 and ordered one for his modest home studio. The thing rocks, but not on acoustic. I keep trying it on acoustic guitar, wanting to like it but it just sounds flat and 2 demensional, no depth for me. I tried different guitars and different players, all no go. I have had better luck with my OSA mp-1 or API 312 but my current preferences above all of those are Pendulum Quartet or Avalon 737. Oh yeah, I loved the P-1 with a 57 on the top of my leslie cab. About the only thing I have not tried it on yet is my Kawai Grand. I do want another P-1 for stereo, but not for acoustic guitar. My 2 cents.

Did you listen to WAR's listening session with the P-1 and the other EM pres? That's what helped me choose the Blue, but I'm still going to get the P-1 later. In fact I hope I'll get the lot in time. Nick | |

| The reason I agreed with Tony on his suggestion, was based upon the variety of preamps the original poster already owns. I believe that of all the models A-Designs offered, he'd be best served with the P-1. This will provide a new flavor to his arsenal. Of course, as soon as he gets it he will soon discover that he'll want them all!!! |

| Snare: Maybe 1.5" above the drum pointed across the head Tom: Maybe 2.5" above the drum pointed across the head Kick: Maybe 8" out from the beater angled slightly off axis Overhead: Maybe 18" above my head pointed into the kit Acoustic Guitar: Maybe 14" out pointed around the 14th fret Elec Guitar: Maybe 3" out pointed slightly off axis For anybody who doesn't know what we're talking about the original thread is here: The A Designs Solid State Shootout (500 series + Pacifica) Having spent time with the entire lineup again...I would pick the BLUE although the P1 would be a close second. First, thank you for your purchase of the P-1. Second, I don't know which mic you were using on the acoustic but you have a few options here. If you have a good Tube mic.........I always suggest the Pearlman TM-1.........but try any Tube Mic and use the "Pad" switch on the P-1. You may find that the P-1 will produce a different sonic character............maybe even one that you like? Regards, Peter Montessi A Designs Audio www.adesignsaudio.com | |

| I gotta say the P1 is almost always my 1st choice on acoustic guitars....but it takes some experimenting to find which mic to use with what guitar... A dreadnaught requires (IMO) a different mic and positioning scheme than an Auditorium sized, classical, or whatnot. Try some SDCs like AT4041, C42, whatever...the P1 with a ribbon is to die for.... for the traditionalist sound, our Michael Joly modded Oktava 319 is almost perfect...several keeper tracks for some scoring work and a couple of country blues projects have been done this way... and yes, a tube mic (ours is a Peluso 2247) with the P1 pad engaged is mighty powerful.... Just a thought.

| I'm in the "which A-Designs" mode myself here. I've read such wonderful things about the whole line, how could I not get one. I have the API 10 space 500 rack so my initial instinct was to use the last couple of slots with the A-Designs pres, based on the user posts concerning those pres and my relatively new Pearlman TM1. Mostly what I read about is the Pearlman and the Pacifica and from what I understand, the P1 is roughly the same so that is my primary focus. Incidently, the pres I use now are the 8 API 512b's that are in the rack so I'm looking for something not in that vein of pre. I haven't been overly thrilled with the vox chain (male baritone) of Pearlman -> API 512b -> Manley ELOP -> Apogee Rosetta -> Nuendo. Oh, the choices we have. Maddening. |
