Building a new studio

So, I'm starting the process of building a new studio that will be making sound effects, and quick music for commercials...

What do you guys suggestion I get in terms of quick music creations? like drum beats made in minutes etc etc.... [real sounding drums and techoish drums.....]

about about for sound EFFECTS? probably just a large condensor?

I already have 1 studio, this is for another business..

everything will be tracked into protoolsHD2 on a mac.

the DSI poly evolver can make some crazy sfx, add some TC fireworx or H7600 touch and you got a horror movie ... add'em to your list ...other then that theres alot of samples CD's if you want some pre made sfx from Akai, Uberschell, and more and more ...

If you use a large condensor it'll take more than five minutes.

I'm using East West Platinum and VSL (ALL of them) library. The sound effects are every SFX libray (Sound Ideas, Hollywood Edge, some of the Soundelux and many more I can't remember etc....) and everything I've ever recorded w/ the remote rig (like skateboards to crickets to actual tanks/planes/jets/cars/trucks/bicycles/rollerskates... - firing/turning/reving/idling/crashing/byes and rain and snow and every footstep in EVERY known substance and pudding squishes and silverware and plates and dishes and glasses and spoons and cups and bowls and clothing rustles - w/ EVERY known cloth, and trains and buses and subways and birds and malls and halls and elevators-motors/pulleys/bells/lobbys and tree frogs and rides in and on cars/tractors/trains/plains/jets/motorcycles........................................................................................................................................)....and even after all that I STILL have to take the rig (Nagra, Deva shotguns & radio lavs) out and record!

The first client you get will send you a clip of a frog in a cardbox with odd shaped rusty wheels going down a molten lava river on Mars playing a harmonica.

It WILL take more than five minutes.

missed the point of my question :-)

I think you missed the point of my question? the large condensor would be used for VO's probably..
I will look into those FX libraries though. I've only used ... I forget what it's called, but it's the 6000 and 3000 collection. .. ANNYWAYS, What I really was asking is: What would you use for FAST music creation, instead of needle drop. Something like soundtrack, but with more control... you know what I mean? mostly just to get the basic grooves done and ready for live instruments to be tracked of it. I'm going to ultimately be mixing in pro tools... I pick pro tools just because I know it like the back of my hand.

If you're looking for just a groove to track live instruments later on, then something as simple Double Platinum Drums, Jim Keltner, Pugie Bell, or just about any drum loop library will work for that.

None of this will be real fast. If you just drop a 120 BPM Drum loop w/ a 120 BPM bass riff that'll be fast - but it won't be good.

And if you're going to just use Sountrack (or even ST Pro) it won't belong in the High End Section. It will work ok to set up rythm guide tracks and may occasionally get the client approval on it's own, but you can't rely on it completely. Clients have heard all that crap before and once you drop a few loops they'll spot you a mile away for being just another Acid Loop wanna be composer (not that you are - it'll just be what they'll think).

You'll have to have the synths and gear to compose the stuff yourself and clients will need track/sheet music for corporate approval. If it's small local stuff, you might be ok but they'll want you to "recompose" notes and phrases so.....

You'll need a slew of mics for reads and spots because some clients will want acting so shotguns and condensors and lavs will be needed.

Bottom line is here in the GS and High End section we kinda focus on the gear that RECORDS the live sounds etc... so loop libraries are a different thing.

I'm kinda buried in so many libries and have concatenated them down into my own cataloging system and drives that I couldn't begin to name them all, but will take a look through the old DVD's.

In any event, like I said earlier, you will need ALL OF THEM!

I agree.

I see where you are coming from. I've done this for years also, but I've always had the luxery of having the budget of calling great talent to play over my demos. At this new studio, I'm pretty sure they are expecting me to do everything myself. which is fine, I was just seeing what equipment you guys would start with.

I have a feeling when I tell them what it will cost to build what they want, they will faint. Because, for once, I'm not gonna say "I have this and that, so you don't need to buy those, we can use mine" ..
