Upgrade masterbus on 6000G

we´re thinking about upgrading the masterbus on our SSL 6048G console to a G+ mastersection, and maybe recap it as well. What are the pros and cons doing this and what do you guys think sounds best?

thanks!

best regards Johan

First of all why do you want to upgrade it?

Second of all what do you think you can upgrade it to?

And lastly are you asking about the center monitoring section itself or the mixbuss?

We´ve heard that the G+ masterbus sounds more open and clear than the G masterbus. The reason we´re considering this, is that we probably need to recap the mastersection since it is more than 10 years old, and we discussed doing the upgrade on the masterbus with our serviceengineer at the same time.

We believe it´s just to change a few cards? is it?

The biggest difference between a G and G+ are;

1) The Bob Clearmountain aux mods

2) The center section with the surround facilities

3) The famous oxygen free cabling

Other than that its pretty much the same as a G.

Personally i've never ever used a center section on SSL that i thought was transparent enough to monitor on until i heard the 9000K.

Its the weakest link sonic wise.

Even if you recap it and change the master volume control it will still sound slodgy.

Especially on a 6000 which has a ton of useless crap in it.

Your best bet although not a popular one to some studio owners is to buy a really good external monitoring section and monitor off that which enables you to bypass the entire center section altogether.

I've carried one to SSL rooms i worked in for years and when i had a 6000 it was the first thing i did(that and modding the mixbuss section so it bypasses the mix-minus matrix).

It totally opens up the sound.

And best of all you can actually trust what you are hearing.

Thanx for your input!

But we´ve heard that there are no condensators at all on the G+ masterbus. Wouldnt this open up the sound a bit more?

We´re already aware of the colorisation the monitoringsection apply to the sound. We´ll consider another monitor solution.

It will take our serviceengineer one day to recap the mastersection. We´ll start with that, and take it from there.

If it doesn't its news to me.

It may be possible though.

I could find out specifically.

To me bypassing the mix-minus summing matrix does a bigger improvement to the sound.

Its an easy mod.

Just use the best cable you can find.

Try it.

If its still not to your liking their are a lot of great monitoring sections out there right now.
