Purely subjective.

If possible I like LA2A on kick...33609 on snare. DBX 160 is nice unit for the money.

There are 50 billion compressors...I'm sure everyone could work. Only engineers know the difference.

In Pro Tools land. I really like the digirack III stuff. Its free, but man it's pretty quality and versatile stuff. I use Focusrite red for smooth compression...and digirack stuff for crunchier sounding compression. Experiment...it's fun.

I like Distressors on kick and snare for most any genre...any FET type will usually work well too.

Distressors always here on the way in pulling about -2 to 3 db max in distortion 3 mode on 2:1 ratio for warmth and tape emulation.

then I opto during the mix on a parallel sub with the OCL-2...

it sounds big man!

The SPL "Transient Designer"... and/or a Crane Song LTD. STC-8, and/or a Smart Reasearch C-2... and/or a parallel path to or through a Chander TG-1.

Other than that, I hate compression on all drums!!!

EL8 for both, pretty much always. Sometimes 1176 on kick or a 2254 on the snare.

this is really interesting.....

would you consider the transiet designer to be a compressor?

or is it just an effect box....

Compressors kinda kill the original sound of the instrument....I do like a little 4db gain reduction on the hardest hits....and no gain reduction at all on the softer ones....
...and a transient plugin (oxford) placed after the compressor.... I like Sony Oxford dynamics/transmod quite...

If I want a clean sounding kick? I'll use a Red 3. If I want a dirty sounding kick? I'll use either a DBX 160vu or a Distressor. On snare, I'll use a DBX 165 or an 1176 cause they tend to make the snare stay in one place.

2254E on both the Kick and Snare is my absolut fav.

Unfortunately I don't own 1 or 2.

I do own 2 Distressors which I never use for Kick or Snare.

I've been using the Massey plugin lately and adding samples tends to compress too.

I've never heard anyone say that before.

When I read it, it was like being in a noisy bar when someone says something wrong and it all goes quiet and everyone looks over!

Snare: Distressor
Kick: None
Drumbus: 1968ME with big on, so again, very little bass freq compression. I like it when the lowend of the kick drum kicks you in the butt where it's expected to be.
I have found that even with sub-par drummers, the kick drum is often the least of the problems (compared to snare and toms ).
And I haven't come accros a compressor that makes the kick sound better in general. Things change and for the larger part for the worse. But that's how I hear kick drums.

Greetings,
Dirk

It depends on if the sound needs compression... If I decide that it needs a compressor, then it's a question of what I want that compressor to do to it (if I'm using it for an effect, snappier snare, rounded off kick, etc.) .... If I decide I want it fast & snappy I'll use my DBX 160's... If I want it rounder, a Distressor or something else. The combinations are limited only by what I have in both the rack and plugins list.

While tracking I like:

Snare=> Atomic Squeezebox and then multed to an 1176 or MC77
Kick=> Pendulum 6386 -> Drawmer gate

I like snares with a great snappy crack to them. I like kicks with a smack you in the chest bottom end, but doesn't get lost in the mix. I hate it when the only way you can hear the kick is by having it over loud in the mix!
