Mixing Console Recommendation??

I am currently putting together a list of equipment needed to open up our 2 room studio. The first room will have the SSL AWS 900 and I need a good mixer for the 2nd room that can run pro tools, logic pro 7, etc...

I have looked into the Euphonix System 5-MC, but I think 100 grand+ is a bit much for the second room. I was looking at the Mackie X bus, but was wondering if there are any better options with about a 80 grand or less budget?

Thanks for all the replies in advance.

why not get an analog desk?

find some kool old amek or trident, mci, neotek, D&R, maybe something odder like a flickengier or mitsubishi if you're going rock/hip-hop.

even an old soundcraft that's all recapped and whatever would be pretty slick, plenty fexlible & quiet.

even that with a control surface would be like, well under $80k

you could buy a nice house in the middle of nowhere for that kinda dough.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately going for an older desk is out of the question, since our investor wants all big purchases to be new (yeah i know not my rules but no my cash either).

As far as buying a house, well it isn't my cash but I would rather live in a decent area with lots of musical toys than live in the middle of nowhere.

80 grand or less? Euhm, another AWS900?

If you can do without DAW control, also check ADT's SRC5.1: www.surroundconsole.com

maybe instead of a console you should get a lot of different pres, eqs and compressors some good converters and a good digital mixer such as the yamaha dm2000. You get a lot of variety and some really good sounds.

I was more thinking of routing. Not sure, but I think it might be possible to fit a Daking with automation. But for the 'old-school' way of mixing, the Daking would be pretty kick-ass

If you have 100.000 dollars to spend on another desk get a 40XX G

They dont make LFC anymore.................

Man i should have got an investor that wanted ALL new gear

...... i should have got an investor.

The Daking would be cool, and i think your investor could flip the bill for the Martin sound Automation......

If it will fit the Daking, if not you may have to go with VCAs

i would look for a serious tracking board. as others have said the daking would be a great option. some neves like the 53 series or a small 80 series also come to mind. trident 80/80b, quad8, electrodyne...they're all good.

if you're looking for another desk with good mixing capabilities the neotek elanII would also be nice. a 32 channel elan with patchbay and producerdesk will cost exactly $30,000. the elite would run about $65,000 in the same configuration if i'm not mistaken.

i haven't tested it myself...but the first desk on the list also seems to be a great option

I tried and tried to buy that desk - he won't even discuss selling it!

then what's the point of putting it on the "consoles for sale" list.

why would someone even list a desk if they dont want to sell.....?

These audio brokers are worst than a used car salesman

sorry,,,, but i had to deal with a few of these guys and they are all listing the same desks, and telling you that they have them..........

very misleading !

I was told he is focusing on selling the Wunder gear, and didn't have time to even discuss selling any of the consoles listed........ (this was from the guy that answers the phone when you call the number on the misty hill site)........

One more vote for the Daking. If I had the money, that's the way I would've gone, although I'm very happy with my Trident 80B.

I don't think MistyHill is too serious about selling those consoles. I know for sure that "Neve Custom 80 Series loaded w/ 60 1073's. Additional photo $200,000" has been sold maybe two years ago... And; it wasn't 1073's all the way through.

I would put Digidesign Icon in room A and put SSL in room B.
I think they have a sale at Digi.
You can get it for about 80k.

Actually, depending on the DAW you already have, a new Euphonix System 5-MC with dual 408T fader modules would be about $80k - ish, not over $100k.

I'd check:

API
SSL
Harrison
Raindirk

for trade in desks. You will get the benefit of a secondhand desk and the service of buying new.

Don't glare at the websites: CALL THEM.

get one of those Harrison desk Lindell suggested. You won't find anything better for mixing IMVHO

I love D&R consoles but if you have the choice of either a D&R or a Harrison with total recall - or better said instant recall what would you choose?

you can fit any fader automation package you want into those desks, they've got plenty of room in there. talk to geoff beforehand and get him to sell you one stripped of it's sliders and go from there.

then again, it looks like this guy wants some sort of digital-space-age-do-it-all thing, so the daking certainly doesn't fit that bill. nice consoles, though.

Stay away from the D&R Cinemix. The preamps are ok, but the EQs are terrible. Also the routing is really frustrating. I always used is as a big monitor controller while mixing ITB.
