Looking to do the drum machine BUT WHAT IS THE BEST

I would like to do the drum machine thing into pro tools hd. I have done a lot of searching and there are so many opinions. So what software would be best and what midi trigger.

BFD
DKFH (ezdrummer or dkfh??)
iDrum
Guru
Battery

-----so many???????? how are the sounds? ease of use? blah blah blah

I would like to be able to put my own samples in and route to individual tracks in pro tools.

Trigger wise--- hows the trigger finger or is there something better.

I will be doing mostly rock and contemp music.

Please---i have no experiance with this software so your opinions are much needed.

Thanks fellow slutz!!!!

Your subject is misleading as software is not a drum machine. Battery works pretty well for triggering drum sounds in a daw.

DFHS/C&V all the way. Had a drummer in here two days ago and when he listened to a rough track he asked who the great drummer was. I explained that all the drums were played on an electronic drumset and DFHS/C&V was the software with all the sample magic. He asked me why on earth people would need a drummer anymore (obviously we can all answer this one pretty quickly but that should tell you how real the drums sound).

However, if you are looking for electronic sounds, you might want to checkout SampleTank 2XL. There's some decent e-drums they include plus you get a ton of other sounds.

Best of luck.

Sorry for my miscommunitcation.

Im looking for a program that will let me load my own drum hits (i have some great samples that i like already) and route individual outs to Pro Tools HD. I will be controlling this program from a trigger pad like trigger finger or the korg unit.

So whats the best program for this and what trigger pad would you guys suggest.

I hope that helps if not let me know---

oh yeah i have sampletank and reason but have not used them. Will these do what im looking for or will i have more fun with a BFD or DKFH

Battery 2 will allow you to sample your own stuff.

You may also want to look into Guru.

BFD and DKFH are all-in software. If you're looking for "real" drum sounds without having to sample they are very good.

There's always the reliable MPC-3000 drum machine which will lock up to PT.

BFD and DKFH are comprised of kits that were sampled by the manufacturer with specific micing techniques in a specific room. They are matched sounds (kits) and thats how they're promoted i.e. being able to mix in amount of bleed through whatever mic(s) you choose.

Guru looks very drum machine like but I'm not sure if it allows custom sampling or importing of your own sounds. You'll have to look into this. They're a very good company and active on Gearslutz.

I know that Battery 2 allows for sampling. I own BFD, DKFH and Battery 2. That's why I bought Battery 2. I grew up with a Linndrum mentality from the 80's and currently own (3) MPC-3000s. I may sell one at this point.
Besides any MIDI keyboard there are numerous trigger devices you can use with the above software to suit your taste.

I recently purchased Roland SPd-20 pads with the kick and hi hat pedals. I miss my old DrumKat.

Stylus RMX (no sampling) is very cool. It allows you to program your own beats with the provided libraries available. It's becoming a must have for me.

Why not just get Drumagog and midi in the drums however you want them and import your samples into DG by creating your own GOG. It's really easy and sounds great.

If you already have reason and want to load your own samples, you can use the reason ReDrum or the NNXT sampler to load your samples into and trigger with a controller :-) For acoustic samples/software DFHS is KILLLLER. I use Ableton Live's Impulse drum samplers for electronic sounds and a great vst called MicroTonic by Sonic Charge ($69) which is great for electronic inspiration.

The Reason NNXT can be used to create multisamples with layer velocity switching for e-drumming but Battery is most likely easier to get what you need if you want to get really deep with lots of evolving player nuances.

Correct.

Correct, although Guru can be considered a 'drum machine' (along with iDrum and Reason's ReDrum) on the grounds that it has sequencer capabilities - it allows you to play and edit whole beats, not just sounds - whereas Battery cannot (along with DFHS and Sampletank) and as such is a drum sound module rather than a drum machine. EZDrummer, BFD, and Stylus-RMX are somewhere in between.. they can play beats, but you can't modify those beats all that much without going to your host's MIDI editing.

Reason has a fairly capable drum machine called ReDrum built in -- it's more powerful than iDrum, but considerably less so than Guru.

Trigger Finger is OK, but do check out the Korg PadKontrol and the new Akai MPD-24 (ships this month, I think) as well - see which pads you prefer as it's very much a matter of taste. Various keyboards with pads built-in are starting to appear on the market (Korg Kontrols, CME UF-series, M-Audio Axiom, Novation Remote SL) so if you want keys as well, they're worth a look.

HTH,
Angus.
