Abbey Road and AVALON?

Why does such a famous studio as abbey road use AVALON pre's? I always thought that people who buy avalon's want style over substance. Does the studio have some deal with avalon which states they must use their pre's?

I think they get used a LOT in popish music. From Steely Dan to Richard Marx. Isn't it "the" modern R&B pre?

People here who slag it tend to like heavy dull tranny pres, IMO.

Please do not confuse the 2022 with the 737...both by Avalon...completely different

Theres nothing wrong with Avalon pres. Although a little overpriced, they are great units. Definately a sound to have at your disposal.thumbsup

I remember reading that article and thinking yea, that is why I always go back to the 737 on vocals over the "big sounding pre's", but couldn't explain it very well.

It's probably because the studio has a deal with Avalon to use their pres

Sear Sound apparently has the same deal.

It's a commercial facility. If an engineer wants Avalon pres, they'll get em for him, if they get used often enough, they'll own some/many, if they have a deal w/ Avalon, they'll have them available.

For the love of God get over it with the "Avalon is cheap" vibe! Avalon makes great gear. Just because a lot of RnB/Rap groups have been using Avalon lately doesn't make them "less than" for main stream use. As a matter of fact I'd be willing to bet just about anything that most of the draw to Avalon pre's from the Rap crowd was mainly based on looks anyway. Remember all you hear is; "get a 737 for it's bling factor!" I can remember in the late 90's every in the scene was using 737's and 2022's all over the place so let's PLEASE get over ourselves on the "Avalon is cheap" thing. Besides half the people mouthing this stuff now is newbies with 2 posts probably just trying to look cool and get some instant cred.....

EDIT: let me make a quick addition to support what I had said above. The person who started this topic has 5 posts. One asking about whether to buy Behringer Monitors or M-Audio and another in Low End Theory asking about a PA amp for his band. Now all the sudden he's a connoisseur of pro audio dogging on Avalon.

You said it!! Avalon makes great products. I dont know why they diss them so much. I have many Avalon products in my studio. In the future they will be classic pieces.

In the 90's, before the 737 blew up, Avalon was considered high end boutique in my circles. I still have my Avalon gear.

An older picture. Not visible are my (2) U5.

Here Here!!!

Avalon = just fine with me!

I am a might be a 'newbie' to high end gear... but I have been a musician for 20 years, and have been recording myself and others the whole time. I have done lots of a/b/c/ding and I fail to see the problem with Avalon.

Having said that, I did just exchange my 747 and 737 for a 2022 and a 2044... plus I have the 2055 - I think this is a great clear sterio chain!

I'll get the colored stuff later if I need it - but I figured to start out... shouldn't I have the least color and adjust at the source? Otherwise wouldn't all my audio start to have the same hue?

Here's a good setting...

DON'T POST ON A TOPIC THAT IS A MONTH OLD!!!

Search for what you're looking for, and if you don't find it, make a new thread!!!

I might be able to forgive you if your question was completely relevant to the old thread, but this has nothing to do with Abbey Road having Avalon pres!!!

Start a new thread... AFTER you search for your question, and can't find the answer you're looking for.

Love you!!!

Modded?

I understand Avalon does great custom work. Is there any indication that the gear in question is stock stuff? If I were Abby Road and I were talking to Avalon, I might have a few..... requirements. I read somewhere that Norah Jones first record used custom Avalon pres - and that sounded pretty good to me.

Sorry to speculate... but I guess the poster is looking for theories.

He ain`t calling anyone, just comparing the Avalon and the `A` range on his cell phone. And he`s been doing this all day. Maybe there`s something to the Avalon anyway.

Yeah, Bryan Ferry started praising Avalon as early as 1982.

Don't do comparisons through a cellphone, RoundBadge!
