High End Cleveland Recording Studios?

Looking for a top notch studio in the Cleveland area - need a sizable tracking room with a Neve or SSL, decent outboard, Pro Tools HD, good mic selection. Any recommendations?

are you an engineer? Or are you looking for something to just work in?

Neve: Ante Up, Closer Look

SSL: Lava Room, Closer Look

AnteUp sucks, you can't hear anything real out of that room.
CloserLook is a bit better but I've never been thrilled with the outcomes there.

LavaRoom is pretty cool, although they don't have a whole lot of outboard (they do have an amazing selection of video games, pinball, and a pool table). The board is very nice (SSL 4000 series). I just tracked drums there for a record I'm working on and we got some really nice sounds. The mic selection is lacking (I brought the mics in for the session and we coupled my choices with some of theirs). They've got PT|HD in studio A and I believe their rate is $65/hr.

That all being said, I'd like to think that AudioLot is one of the best studios in Cleveland to work in. We give a very personal touch, keep our rates extremely reasonable, and the only thing we don't do here is track drums. I do serious records all the time here with fantastic results. You can check out www.audiolot.com/studios if you'd like more info. We're a Nuendo house here but fully compatible with PT sessions as long as you bounce from 1|1|000 or use DigiTranslator to create an OMF session. Never had an issue with anyone who started a PT project and came here to finish everything.

I'm a producer with a project that requires the studio being capable of handling live drums and a band that will track together. Thanks for the insights - what ever happened to Beechwood?

hey,
you should definitely check out chris keffer at magnetic north studios. his studio is in the phonebook. iv'e worked with him a few times and iv'e always found him to be very pro and very nice. magnetic north has a nice big room for "big" sounds (roughly 20ft ceilings) and a small "dead" room too. he's got a bunch of nice outboard, nice mic selection, and a new (to the studio) trident console that's pretty sweet. good luck,
-daniel

Hummmmm well how about that. Everyone else sucks but your studio rocks... who would-a thunk it?

Seriously man that is about the worst example of pimping I have ever witnessed.

Um, read. I gave LavaRoom a heck of a review, recommended it, and said I just tracked drums there with good results.

Btw, Beachwood Studios is alright as well but they just sold all their tape machines in favor of Yamaha O2R96's. So.... there's that. They are also the single most expensive studio in town (I believe it's something like $200/hr from last I heard).

I recorded some stuff at Ante Up. The people there were very nice, and the rates were definitely reasonable (I think it was $450 for a 10-12 hour day with engineer).

The neve they have is one with the IC's (i think 8168), unfortunately. It was also experiencing some issues when we recorded there, but I think they were having it fixed. There was also some problems with their headphones system, but they were cool and gave us free extra hours for time lost.

We got some really really sick drum sounds from their room on a DW custom kit. Sounded huge.

On the downside, they had a ton of nice outboard that the engineer didn't use AT ALL.

I'd say if you could bring in your own engineer, it would be a great place for tracking.

here is the bottom line truth! I have worked in all A LOT! This is what I do and where I do 75% of my work!

Ante Up-Neve 8128, floting floors, nice design but not very functional, good mic selection PT HD

Closer Look-Great live room and THE BEST POSSIBLE RATES! Neve 8108 and your luckey if all the channels work, PT 5.1 on a Mac OS 9.1.1???? Terrible, I cant even find a hard drive to work there! No plug ins! Vintage U47's, U87's, Origonal 1176's, La2 (not La2a) but your lucky if that works! Then in B an SSL 5K... its an SSL but sucks!

Lava Room- Where I do all my work now. PT 7.1 HD 4 in A with a SSL 4056G+, HEDD, 1176's, La3, La2a, SUmmit, Tube Tech, everything there! But the mic selection sucks!

Beachwood is still around but doesnt use PT and has something to their converthers.... only worked there 1 time and was a long time ago!

There are a lot of other studios out there but honestly, these are the ones I reccomend... and Closer Look is not really a reccomendation unless you can deal with headaches but want true vintage gear!

How about Audiolot? I don't see that on your list?!?!?

Just joking with ya kittonian. I know you are a private shop, or I think you are anwyay, that uses all in-house staff.

Yes, we are mostly a private studio where the staff does the work. Occassionally we do a session where a producer is brought in but there is always someone from our staff (90% of the time it's me) running the gear and making it all happen from the engineering side. This is not to say that we don't work on big records. We do, all the time. But, if you are looking to rent out a room at a studio and be the engineer, etc. AudioLot is probably not the place to do it.

Oh yeah.... can't forget about Ushers new Studio outside of Cleveland.... All the urban work is done in Cleveland now and Usher's staff is going to take over!

There is a fella down in Akron that has a VR room called Primetime Studio. I haven't ever recorded anything there but the owner has been pretty cool when we've talked. Not that that means much but it's another place to explore.

We have an amazing recital hall at the college I teach at but I don't know if I could use it for any type of session work. I have recorded some great drummers in that room and the sound is huge....

Good luck!

Thanks for the inside word - most of my work is in NY/L.A./Nashvegas. Looking for a studio in Cleveland that is comparable to that kind of level. I'd be bringing in my own engineer, assistant, etc. Don't ask why, just wanting to work in Cleveland... Truth is, though, I need it all - great gear, great sounding tracking room, equipment that works, decent console. Not a fan of the Neve IC models.

I've heard about a relatively new studio in Lexington KY that's pretty hip, but its still not Cleveland.

I would recommend Ante Up. Nice people, control room sounds pretty accurate from what I heard and they have a 56 ch neve, which has been fully refurbished. I heard a couple of drums tracks recorded there that sounded pretty good to my ears.

No such thing.

One of the many reasons I'm moving to Nashville.

If the Neve/SSL ever stops being a requirement, I can tell you about a great studio (in the Cleveland area) with great sounding Trident board and really great sounding rooms.

Good Luck!

Trash talking the competition in your own market is in poor taste.
It typically extends to trash talking your previous clients as well.
It ends up making you look stupid.

Plus you took your Pelussos you're ALWAYS PIMPING to record your drums with them!

Two days ago you posted something about Peluso or Peluza however they're called and I ALSO QUOTED YOU, AND I'M ALWAYS GONNA QUOTE you because everytime I see a post of yours is the same Pimping BS.

Well man, long story short, if you can't track drums in a studio then what. A Drumkint might be the only reason I'm paying for a studio so rebuild your room...maybe hang up some pelussosfuuck and use them as reflective surfaces...

Hey I didn't realize there are so many slutz in Cleveland. So hi!

I'm getting ready to do a drum session at a studio in Streetsboro ohio called Mars. I did one record their already. The owner's Bill Korecky. Super talented ears.

www.marsrecordingstudio.com

They have a Neve V48 w automation. Pro Tools HD and a 24 track tape machine.

Also, I haven't worked out of Lava Room but those guys are really nice. Mike Brown by reputation is a talented engineer.

Those from what I've heard are the best (with console)

Also, The Neon Cactus which is where I have done a few projects at has a really sweet live room. Really cool guys and vibe too.

www.neoncactusstudios.com

Best of luck!!

I used to live by that place. I have heard about it...but have never HEARD anything that had come out of it. Last time I heard anything about it it was all analog with an MCI console.
