Higher end Gear you've hated?

Seems like all the questions have been asked, except this one. (As far as I have read) Are there any higher end gear, pres, mics, comps, lims, EQ's, that have just stunk to the trolls, especially given the cost?? Lets say cost per "thing" is 800 bux and up...to... more $$$$$$$$

Monster cables. Not quite $800, but still too expensive for their quality.

U87. It's a standard in many studios but I've tried them a few times and could never learn to like its sound. No thanks...

And Focusrite Red from the mid-90s. Uninteresting to me. Keep it...

AKG 414. I used to like them and used them every day but using one now is very unsatisfying.

Put the tlm 103 on djembe / hand drum / toms ( especially floor )

IT IS ABOUT THE WHOLE CHAIN THOUGH RIGHT ???

I remember one post where homeboy was dissing 414's ........ he had it plugged into a tascam 8-track cassette recorder with a 1/4" adapter .........

LOL

the mic wasn't the problem !!

Know what I'm saying ???

Then again I bought my 103's for $700 ea ( years ago )

gotta agree with the TLM 103. Way too much sizzle. World away from my AEA
R84. That said, I bet the TLM 103 would make a good mic for a rapper. It's got presence up the wazooo.

DAV-BG1.
I bought into all the Hype on this for once. It had a dull sounding top end and the transient response was not up to par. Although it did sound decent on slow melodic instruments, organ, sax etc..
The piano was where it really showed its weakness. Solo acoustic Martin was not very pleasing at all. Again the plucking transients were weak.

Jim williams mod is supposed to help with these weaknesses from what I read here.

on the hype guys.

Pro Tools 192. I remember someone saying, "it's better".

Neve 80 series consoles. One big fuzztone, aural exciter all rolled into one.

Neumann TLM mics, oh what Sennheiser has done to this company!

I'm sure to be real popular with these selections.

Don't like dav's? Oh man I love it. But if it's not working for you, then I will have my birthday soon :))).
Ok, hate almost every "new" neumann (agreed that sennheiser did wrong thing with that company). Toooo much overpriced and overhyped, but sonically they are so so.
Second is Protools.

Hi Moogy,
Let me start by saying, if you are disappointed with your Gama, I'm sure that we can make arrangements with Vintage King to get you into something else, with no hassels. We want you to be completely satisfied. I've just got to add, that the Gama is not an api clone, imitation, or knock off of any kind. It's not a tube mic pre, maybe that is what you were expecting. Both the API and the Gama are discrete mic pres, as are Helios, Neve, Quad Eight, and Calrec. Our mic pres have three switchable output transformer modes, one of them being transformerless. It is designed from scratch, made with our custom opamps and custom wound transformers.

Focusrite Liquid Channel. YECHH!

Any AKG 414 made after 1989. ESPECIALLY the current version! What is Harman thinking? Sheesh.

Neve Capricorn (sorry!) from the scribble strips to the crappy dynamics to the wonky fade algorthms.

I think the first six months of TLM 103 production mics were great, the last two years sound harsh in comparison. Anyone know if they were tooled differently or outsourced to a third world country?

Henry, any idea if the 67's you worked with were in good condition, or recently checked/tuned? When they're right, they are stunning. When they are in mediocre condition, they're only a doorstop. Sorry you have only found doorstops!

Re 67 - That's what I've heard. I believe one of them had recently been worked on. But I can't tell what. Each time there was a mid range honk I found uncomfortable.

KM 184's -- want to sell them

Avalon 2022, 737 (but i like the 747)

to me, these seem like nouveau high end pieces ... not really high end at all... funny, they were all really bright!
