- Everything by Avalon ( however a friend of mine uses almost exclusivly Avalon stuff and his mixes sound awesome but it just doesn't do it for me).
- Neumann U87ai, I didn't hate it, but I except more coming from a mic that cost that price.
- Focusrite red

all these old Neve Eqs and preamps that people say are great than neve but in reality the exceptionl piece of neve is the 1073...most of all these units are noisy and far in quality sound from the 1073

all protools before HD

John hardy preamps......too sterile!

You see this is what I love about music.

We can all totally disagree on what gear is best and yet still come up with great sounding tracks using stuff others hate.

All I can say is, thank god we have such a wide choice to choose from!, there's a piece of gear or software out there to suit everyone

Hmmm, high end stuff I dont like?, genelec monitors (and mackies).

what's the difference in sound between a 1073 and a 1084, except for the extra EQ?

Apogee Ensemble. Never had a piece of gear this good and this bad at the same time. Awesome tone but tons of hiss (same problem on multiple units....oweee!). Wasted a bunch of time only to find out this is how it's designed?!?!?!?!?!?

Could this be the touch of the Apple?

Genelec monitors .... the bane of modern music, IMO

Avalon 737 .... defines the word "weenie"

Amek 9098 .... without the name Neve on it, no one would care

Summit Audio everything I've tried.... I don't get it

All PT before HD .... c'mon, admit it, you were all kidding yourselves

Studer A820 ... the meters alone do it in

TC Gold Channel .... the worst sounding thing I ever heard, seriously

Distressors ..... not bad, really, just vastly over-hyped

The sound of most high end control rooms ... rooms that sound like crap and yet people pay good money to build them .... weird

Hate doesn't apply. But gear that, in the end, just didn't compete for very limited space and I sold:
-Genelec 1030A monitors
-Distressors
-Royer R-121
-Coles 4040
-Lil FrEQ's
-Drawmer 1968
-Vintech X81's
-KSP8
-Trackers
-Quartet II's.

These are probably all working great for those who bought them in perfect condition at low prices.

We all hear things a little differently.

Eventually, what a great topic!

There's plenty of such gear.

Thermionic Culture Culture Vulture - useless crap

Thermionic Culture The Phoenix - slow, colorless, no personality, tacky

SSL XLogic XRack

Alan Smart C2

SSL XLogic G-Series Compressor - hyped out but not deserving it

tfpro P38

Manley Vox Box - mediocre preamp, good EQ though

I'll keep thinking, there're so many more of those...

Bob

Damn.....I fricken love my Drawmer 1960!
I understand that many on this board don't like it, but I find the Bass DI is killer, the preamps are great with 57's for amps, and the compressor is killer for tracking vocals.
Makes me think that some units or versions sound different from what I got.

None that I've hated, but dissapointed with solid-state gear. Sixties and early seventies still had the sound, then the magic started dissapearing.

but to say by merit that tube gear is superior or that all of it has " a sound" just because it is tube isnt really accurate. There are many tube pieces that dont have that "sound" that you are talking about...and there are preamps such as the DAV, Vintech, Pacifica, etc, that have been identified as tube in listening tests, but of course are solid state... it totally depends on the design..

Gefell um900 is a tube mic, but it certainly does NOT have that sort of "thick, creamy" sound... too many variations to generalize.
