yeah, kind of like comparing a '58 ferrari california spyder to a '89 camry.

BTW: I had a brand new '89 camry and it was very reliable -- not exciting, but reliable. Nowadays I get to drive something with a little more pizazz, but the camry wasn't a terrible car -- my mother-in-law loves it.

414 XLS

Second That: I really dig the 414XLS too. It has won a few mic shootouts on make vocs at my place, even over Silver EB's and Old Neumanns...

No no's for me: Not a huge Genelec fan...though those older ribbon loaded S30s were pretty awesome.

Wasnt nuts about the dbx160VU...yeah, I know. Kooster likes em...maybe the pair I had needed service. I generally love dbx stuff (less the 266) for what it does.

Avalon 737 didnt knock me out...sent three back. The mastering EQ is outstanding however.

Pro Tools - havent heard HD in person...

Waves L1 and Waves Dither.

Never liked ADAT, ever.

Audix anything. oooo the pain.

Sony 2" eeeeeeeewwwwww

Studer CD players.

Love the variable polar patterns (especially figure 8). I haven't had too many other condensers but the AKG's beat my old AT4040's which were a little more agressive and more noisy, my old Rode NT1A, which was maybe a tad less noisy but far less musical, and my TLM 103, which I HATED, just like everyone else.

Brauner Valvet - I'd define its sound to be tubey-sterile...

U87 on vocals - sterile, never liked it. Haven't tried it on anything else...

RE20 - never liked it, thin and boxy.

M149 - didn't hate it exactly, but sounded boring to me - especially for that money...

First UAD version - the compressor emulations sounded small, narrow and squishy to me... Will try one again for the Neve stuff and Pultec EQ.

I have a hard time with my ADAM P11s... There's something about them I just don't like... Will likely go with K&H O300D sometime...

If I may...

I notice a trend line. The folks that have no love for the Royer 121 generally prefer a 57 or 58 for guitar.

And I don't love a 57 on guitar cabs. I know, I know, how many records, how many hits, Sarcralige!.... But fact is, I usually think that there's so many better options at my disposal. I find 57's do that 2-cycle motor-bike through you nose thing and 80's metal sound like no other mike can. Of course it can be used for lots of other effects as well but I just think there are usually better, more agile sounding mics for the job than the 57.

On the other hand, I love the 121. Lots of body, depth, flesh.... what you call mud. I know others that feel like I do.

So, I suspect, you're either one or the other. Or neither. Or both.....

Manley enhanced "PULTEC" eqs (just never shined on anything).
Neuman 103 (I hate to be on the bandwagon, but I gave mine to a producer I work with, and now that I listen to his takes, I HATE it.)

BTW

Can someone finally set the record straight. What is the difference between the amek 9098 series stuff and the Channel in a BOX?

I have 2 CIBs. I know that they are different, but I dont know how much different.

I've never used the 9098's but I love my CIBs (especially the EQ's) so much that I wouldn't mind another pair. (Though I need to pick up some "thicker" stuff first ala NEVE/API).

Must be a pretty big difference between the 9098 stuff and the CIB, judging by the comments about the 9098 stuff.

... ditto many of the above, but I'll add a new one:

The Masterlink

Slow, cumbersome, terrible sounding redbook cd's, and even with outboard A/D and D/A, it just seemed to gack with the sound...

Well, dunno if I can set any records straight from my experience, as I've never directly A/B'ed them... nor have I reached yet for the 9098 on anything like a lead vocal (of which I've done many on the CIB). But if I had to characterize them on my limited experience with the 9098, I'd say it was thinner than the CIB. And the EQ not as flexible or warm. And no compressor (which is really quite nice on the CIB, imo) Kind of boring compared to the relative robustness of the CIB. Due to its filter and hishelf, though, it often gets used by me... on hat! Killer for that... The 9098 has also worked well recently on Irish fiddle. Again, a bit on the thin side.

For most basics tracking, my two CIB's go on kick and snare. Love them for their ability to sculpt.

Almost every piece of gear considered by most people to be the "cats meow" has had at least one cameo in this thread. Thats why I started it in the first place!

Apparantly its in the ear, and not the gear........

I think the thread title alone might indicate that many of our gear purchases are driven by fear. Don't wanna get something that's not popular! Surely it will ruin your productions! Especially if it was expensive....

It's the fear, not the gear.

Distresser (not the least bit impressed)

RNC (not high end, though, really)

Neumann M149 (as someone said, quite boring, not horrible though)

Soundelux U99 (bright, thin, cold)

Amek 9098 pre/eq (usable but pre has a rubbery effect to it (best I can describe)

Neuman TLM 103 - Tires ears

A TL audio Compressor - Harsh

The sound of a stock protools system - You know

Korg Triton - Built in FX arent that great. There are some good samples in it, but they're not multi-sampled to a high enough degree.

SSL Mix Bus Compressor - What it does to the mids and highs is awsome, but it makes the low end sound small. The Channel compressors pump nicely though.

IMO

Please enlight me of what you disliked about the Compounder... ´Cause I was SO damn surprised how good it was for the drum-bus... It pretty damn much blew me away.... I did NOT excpect that from a cheap compressor...

Yep... do a search on GS for just about any piece of gear and this thread will pop up.

This thread is a CLASSIC example of why you need to try things for yourself in your environment. Almost anything you can think of is listed on this very thread with the title of "High end gear that you've hated.

Funny isn't it?

- Pro Tools - (older versions, haven't used HD)
- ADAT'S
- I love my Apogee Rosetta's but getting them to work... that's a different story.. the people at Apogee sometimes don't even know what they are talking about...
- Alesis Monitor Two's (in smaller rooms don't work)
- Yamaha Digital mixing consoles, (don't know why I ever used those...)
- Line6 Pod (it will never sound like a real tube amp!!!!)
- Neuman KM 184's ( I still have them, but rarely like them)
- Did I mention ADAT's?

Yep. Couldn't agree more. I actually have a chain with a lot of gear mentioned on here and it's working fine for my needs. If it's putting $ in my pocket doing VO at the home studio using a U87>M619>Trakker>Lil' FrEQ (soon to be purchased instead of using a loaner), then I don't have a problem with it
