Very highly over-rated.
If that were your only set of ref monitors getting a decent mix would be similar
"an act of God" or the "Second Coming of Jesus."

They do suck.

I hate anything by:

Neve, RCA, Neumann, Ampex, Chandler, API, UA, Manley, Chandler, Drawmer, Pultec, Fairchild,Mercury, Tubetech, Cranesong, Mastering Lab, Langevin.

I've tried all these mics, mic pres, compressors, tape machines and...

they ALL make my kazoo sound midrangy.

You think they all suck on a kazoo--try them on a cowbell--it's a total travesty!!

korbys mod made it much much better.\

I recently miked a guy who played the kazoo from his bum. I miked it with Coles 4038 into a Fearn tube mic pre to a Crane HEDD at 24 bit/96kHz to PT HD3. The direct sound was warm and fuzzy, but the early reflections were just terrible. Sounded like there was a piece of tissue paper inside that kazoo somewhere!

Seriously...loved your post!

Hated...

Mackie 824's. They make your ears hurt, are way too scooped and dont translate AT ALL.

Tl audio 2 channel valve pre what ever it is. - distorts reeeeeeeeeealy easily, makes my 002 pres sound good.

Millenia hv3d - Theres clean and then there just plain dull and uninspiring on more or less any source.

Pro tools mix - god it's slow, id rather be using LE!!

Orange county drums - poorly made over rated cack

The Duende has unfortunately become completely unusable in my studio. It's too bad because it sounds great; there are just too many issues with firewire and latency, with multiple DAW's, and believe me, I have exhausted damn near every workaround.

Oh well.

The first time I ever used a Red 7, I had no clue what they sold for. After listening to it through nice headphones, my first impression was that it's some kind of generic $1000 channel strip. I was shocked when I saw it going for almost $3000. Totally not worth it in my opinion. People say great things about it, but I guess different strokes for different folks.

This is hilarious. We had one in our mic closet. The ONLY thing I ever used it on was a rapper. Funny.

Demeter VTMP-2c.... I had high hopes when saw that this was the places ONLY mic pre (vx production studio.) But ended up being really disapointed and frustrated having to use it. Another engineer working there donated his 9098 to use instead... yes a 9098. He hated the Demeter as well so I'll chime in that second motion on his behalf.

Never understood all the support and use of Avalon anything really... One time a producer I worked for swaped out his Great River for a.... Avalon. wow..

TLM 103. I'd consider wrapping a magnum condom around it and flushing it down a toilet. I'm sure it'd sound great for that!

AKG C12 VR.. Tin can anyone? I remember puting it up, doing a take. And puting it right back into the box. yuk! Honest truth, an Oktavia mk-319 sounds better. 250 bucks compared to 5k? double wow. Maybe it was that particular mic...

Drawmer 1960. Like paying 3k for an ART.

Pro-Tools HD. Especially these days. My macbook running Logic and AU plugs can build much bigger mixers, and way more instances of 3rd party plugs without having to do the "DSP shuffle" towards the end of a huge mix. Mixing RTAS with TDM and having to even think about it got old real quick. It's starting to feel strange walking into a place with more horsepower sitting inside my laptop bag than the mutilple cards sitting in that chasis that cost thousands and thousands of dollars. And who is really using the converters on the 192 these days? We've all spent at least an additional 2k+ for that. The cost of Logic and an Ensemble is less than one Acel card. Not trying to turn this into a PT vs Native DAW thread, but PTHD is starting to become that higher end gear I'm beggining to resent, especially if and when it chokes.

Oh well.
That's why i only buy hardware for compression and Eq processing! What's the point if with each state of the art plug in you have to dedicate a $2500 supa computa to run it...

Opinions matter!!!!

I noticed on this thread that Roundbage likes the Daking Pre, while TheThrillFactor doesn't. That's all i needed to see!! Went out and bought one today.
