My Apogee Rosetta update

Well I just got the Rosetta 800, and I am very happy. I first had problems using it with the RME card that I already have . You can't put ADAT 1 and 2 on output Bus 1 in my DAW. I had to use ADAT 9 and 10 for Bus 1 even though I was using 1 & 2 on my D Sub. Then when I record at 88, it's ADAT 5 and 6. This took several hours to figure out was the problem.

I was actually very anxious about getting the Rosetta since I loved my Mytek A/D so much. Thankfully the Apogee pulled through. The top end is not as sparkley but has a more even top end with the mid's. The D/A is a lot clearer than the D/A in the Central Station I was using. The Central Station blew away my old Behringer DDX D/A converter removing a thick veil from the sound. When I went to the Rosetta, it took a soft veil off giving a clearer sound. Currently I am using the Rosetta clock as master and have a word clock cable going from the Rosetta to the RME. My next purchase after this Rosetta is paid off is a dual Great River EQ. I will then test the Big Ben with the Rosetta and see if the improvement is $1,000 worth. If it is, I will get if not, I will smile and save my money.

It would be best for me to keep my Mytek in case I want that more top end clear sound, but I need the money to pay for the Apogee. Anyone want a 2 channel A/D Mytek in a smoke free studio, let me know.

I have a rosetta 800 as well, i think its a great converter, im thinking of getting the big ben cause of what i read, and also im using a sony c800g threw a martech mss10 so i feel since my mic/mic pre are extremely high end that maybe a big ben would further enhance the high end clearity and stereo depth.

Just make sure you try it out yourself before you get it. If it only makes a slight difference..... we have to make the decision ourself and not by what others say.. though it seems a lot of people feel it does make the improvement that warrents it.

well from what i heard. i talk to some good audio engineers they said the rosetta was made for the big ben. Basically saying the rosetta good alone but combined with the big ben its a match made in heaven. I hate to put it like this as in apogee marketing tactics but if they made the rosetta with the big ben clock it would be $4000, so that would take budget people away from sales, so by having them seperate it gives people a chance to get into that pro level conversion for under 3 grand and with the option of the big ben its gives you the option of getting into the real good pro sound, for those willing to spend more to maximize their sound.

Revelation, have you heard the RME ADI-8 Pro's? Im currently using them, and i was wondering if it would be worth it to switch to the Rosetta 200 since i only need 2 channels of AD/DA.

There was a thread with some sound files about this a while back, and I think the gist was that the Rosetta 800 wasn't better on everything with the BB; that in some cases it sounded better by itself.

I don't really remember the whole deal. I figured an external clock with something like a Rosetta 800 would be superflous unless you were syncing a bunch of boxes together, but I don't know.

Central Station and Rosetta are also on "my list"
Just curious, are you still using your Central Station now, perhaps via digital inputs? Or are you going from Rosetta to your speakers ... ?

Yes I am still using the Central Station. It has mono, dim, mute, volume control, talk back, options for several montior switching, and the unit is very clean. I get my output bus 1 & 2 from the Rosetta and have XLR from it to quarter inch into the CS.

With this BB issue, I was told at the higher sample rate of 88 or 96, the BB makes less of a difference. But right now, I can tell you I am getting an amazing sound with the Rosetta, that I don't really care to run out and get a BB since the converters and sound I get right now sound amazing. After I pay this puppy off and have some money there are other things more important that my studio that I need over a better clock.

Yea i cancel the bigben order i had. I think there right big ben is only good for multi converters connected and alot of other digital connections. For $1350 id rather buy more gear cause i dont you would see 1300 in sound difference maybe a little but not enought to justify that price.

Love mine. The first thing I noticed a while back before I got my own was the stereo image stood out better.
