I've got a Plate-Sonics plate. The guys building them are really cool and its a very unique sound. It's passive with no enclosure so they are able to keep the costs down that way. They are talking about some new pick-up options too.

if you have the time let us know how it goes and what you're using.. i've been considering building one for a while, only thing that's hard to locate is a good plate or someone who will sell me one. if anyone has any ideas about where to buy appropriate thickness plates (around 1/64 inch) in NYC please let me know.

if you havent seen this already here's someone who built one, with a detailed account of the process:

I just bought a driver http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/6bd8/
and am in no hury to get a plate I have a couple other projects to complete

I tell you what though, I hooked that driver up to my 5 watt Epiphone
get-amp. and slaped the driver on my gong and wa frinkin la , it turned
my gong into a speaker . it sounds cool. I put a mic on each side of the
gong for a stereo effect . I like. its fun with a wah

I would do more research on plates before you have a go.
that one that that guy built sounds like a speaker in a trash
can

I think you want a plate that is 24 - 28 gauge steel

Hey Tony

I have been toying with the idea of picking one up, can you go into any more detail about it?

Thanks.

I reviewed the Plate-Sonics "Cathedral" for Tape Op. The review was two issues ago I think. It's a really unique sound because of a lot of things. It's passive, so I've been gaining it up with a headphone amp because it lives in my live room. I return it to two console pres because I'm taking the lines from a DI to the snake. It's pretty dark and the sustain isn't as long as I expected. I think I'm gonna sit with a wrench soon and play around with "tuning" it a bit. The thing I really notice is that it kinds of adds a halo to the sound. Very unlike a spring in an amp or a reverb box. Because it doesn't have any housing you can use it "acoustically" I ran lines while tracking drums the other day, and I have a really cool piano recording from the night I got it. If you compress the returns it can add a lot of presence to the tone.

I believe they are going to call me an "endorser" because I did buy the plate after reviewing it.
