FMR R.N.P or the Universal Audio solo 610/110. Which would you choose?

I got to make a decision in the next couple of days as far as which one I want, and wanted last minute thoughts on this. Recording electric guitars is the most important thing from heavy overdriven stuff to clean chords, so which one ever works best for that I am going with. My electric tones sound like Tony Iommi's darker tone, or Malcom Youngs crunchy tone. My lead sounds like Eric Jonnson's violin tone, or the Edge's David Gilmour's clean echo tone. Don't know if any of this will help you but I really wanted to narrow it down so I can make sure I'm getting what I want. Thanks

David Gilmour just ordered 48 Channels of DAV BG-1, speaking of..

do a search on DAV BG-1 here...it is 700 bucks for two channels. Best mic pre around, in my opinion, at any price point...
www.davelectronics.com/bg1.htm

you can order from them directly by emailing

mick@davelectronics.com OR davelectronics@tiscali.co.uk

the RNP is nothing special, IMHO...

Here's a page on the UA site that has clips using the 110 pre:

110 pre

Can't find any 610 clips to compare though.

I haven't used the RNP so I can't comment.

I used to own a 2-610 and didn't like it on anything I tried it on, it clipped way too easily and just didn't sound very good to me. But I sold it to my friend and he loves it.

Is the UA 110 anything like the 108/2108? I have a 2108 and it totally kicks ass. It's one of my favorite preamps on lots of things, particularly guitars. I ditched my Great River in favor of it. If the 110 is anything like the 2108 I'd highly recommend it.

They both have a sound...but the UA has much more....even when not pushed hard.

If you want more versatility, go with the RNP...if you want more milk get the UA.

David

The solo 110 is a single channel version of there 4110 and 8110 mic pre boxes.

It also has three tone settings. 2 with tranny and 1 without. Lots of bang for the buck. It also uses the output stage of the since discontinued 2108. I have 4 ch of 2108 and want at least 2 more, so if it were me, I would lean towards the solo 110. I think it would be more useful than the solo 610 as I have owned a 2-610 so I can indeed comment on the limits of the 610, but it is nice as a bass DI and good for vocals.

Thanks, like i said though I need something that's the most geared towards electric and acoustic guitars.

I read somewhere that the 2108 has the same output stage or transformer as the 1176, can anyone confirm or deny this? But, yeah, it sounds like the 110 is in at least the same ballpark as the 2108 so I'm guessing it probably sounds pretty good.

Oh, I forgot about the 610 on direct bass... that was the one application I did like it on somewhat.

Yes, you are correct. Same output stage as the 1176.

I've never used the 110.

I've used the RNP and thought it sounded pretty lame. Sytek kicks it's ass in the price range, IMO.

I have an LA610 that's not going anywhere soon. People who say they distort too easily need to gain stage it differently, IMO.

So would you say the 610 would be a nice fit for guitars?

I like it on guitars...but, it softens the sound some...good for my style of sound--certainly not as "in your face" sounding as the Great River Me1nv or API 512c I've used. But, for a more classic, blues tone...sweet, chimey goodness.

The two impedence settings sound REALLY different-particularly on certain mics.

I have a Solo 610 and it works great on everything you put it on. The microphone and placement make a huge difference.. its not all just preamp magic.
