I just paid 500 bucks for what said on the price tag "vintage RCA SK50 M1" The guy that sold it to me said he didn't know if it was a ribbon mic. Can you guys tell me more about ths mic? I've heard of other RCA models but not this one. I bought it cause it looks cool as hell!!

I also want to know what would be the best pre for this mic. This is what I have. Avalon 737, Focusrite red3, Focusrite ISA110, Vipre, Vintech 1272, UA 6176, Joe Meek VC1. I've used a Royer 121 in a studio that had one, I know that the Royers are a bit different sounding. What is this mic good at capturing? I'm on the road right now and wont be home for a few days so I'm trying to get as much input on this mic as I can. I'm dying to hear what it sounds like. Any advice would be aprreciated. Thanks!!

you paid $500 for a mic you never heard, or even heard OF, and the guy who sold it to you didn't know what kind of mic it was... ...did you test it out to make sure it worked? definitely takes balls, i guess. to answer your questions about what will make it sound good, well, you have the equipment. plug it in. |

if they did "test" it, it was plugging a cable into it and making sure sound happened. i'm 100% positive they didn't look any further into it than that. a broken mic will often produce sound. it will be an awful, terrible, disgusting sound, but your run of the mill guitar center employee will never be able to tell the difference, nor will he care. there's a 77 at the Queens store near my studio for something like $1800, and it looks like it's been dropped about 1000 times and none of them employees know if it's ever been plugged in, and some of them aren't even the slightest bit familiar with ANY 77. they'll look at the $1800 "vintage" price tag and do everything in their power to tell you otherwise, though. if it works and you like it, more power to you, but i'd be extremely careful from now on. my own opinion? you spent 500 beans on a conversation piece. but hey...i could be a huge idiot. | |

I say you plug it in to a pre and turn on the phantom power. You will instantly know if it is a ribbon or not. |

You have got your self the ribbon motor unit of a 77D and as such it is very very good. The only problem is that the transformer is about as usefull as a chocolate fire guard. You will be well advised to take it to a bloke called Wes Dooley who will be able to fit another transformer and have a good look at the ribbon and the silks that are there to stop anything getting into the ribbon assembly. When Mr Dooley gives it back to you, you will have a great mic. Sorry mate right now its just parts of what could be a great mic. Then if you look at my avatar thats the next bit you will need to complete the job. In order to get one of those you will need a gun, money will probably not help much. Other than if you go to Blackbird Audio rentals in Nashville and promise to bring it back when you are done. $500. is not too bad a price for this historic mic, I saw a well faffed up one go for that on ebay just the other day.
