| Lives for gear | Favorite heavy rock/metal records?
So what are some of your favorite heavy records? I havent heard too many good sounding heavy recordings recently. For me production wise Refused 'shape of punk to come' record is one of my favorite sounding records. That with a few Steve Evetts records and theres what I keep around for reference. I went out and bought the new Korn record hoping for amazing production (since the budget was thru the roof) and its definetly big sounding, but I couldnt make out a single note. I wish a lot of smaller guys were making big records. |

Helmet - In The Meantime IMHO one of the heaviest record ever made. The latest Slayer - God hates us all is heavy as hell too. Anthrax - Among the living, a classic. Most new metal records just sound boring and lifeless, u can totally hear there have been some serious soundreplacing on them. System of a downs stuff sounds pretty good to me though. |

Definately gotta agree on the Refused album. Have you heard their earlier album "songs to fan the flames of discontent"? Very good as well, and IMHO, heavier. Whenever I listen to either one, it makes me wanna run my car into something... Ian |

Mechanical animals is awesome, even if it is pop music. Its funny, theres a bunch of bands on this list that normally stay at my friend's houses when in town. So many guys playing good music make hardly no money at all. As for Refused records, songs to fan.... doesnt have anything on shape of punk.... Too bad the singers new band internation noise conspirancy sucks. |

Mine is still the 'Black' album by Metallica. The production IMHO is way over the top but so right for such a pompous and self indulgent band of 'Artists'.... which they act and carry on like in every sense of the word! The Mix and engineering by Randy Staub is simply a Fantastic excercise in compression!!!!!! I know this album backwards!!! and i can do AIR drums to the WHOLE album!!!! ( i consider this quite a feather in my cap!.... and provides for a lot of hilarity in difficult sessions) PEACE Wiggy |

Shudder To Think "Pony Express" Produced by Ted Nicely. Mixed by Andy Wallace. Strange vocals. Strange guitars. Strange songs. Definitely takes a while to get used to but when you do it seriously rocks.

Metallica - Black Album (Great songs first and foremost and a Production I still can't decide whether I love or I hate it - fake as hell sounding loads of trigger stuff on the drums going on...) HIM - Greatest Lovesongs 666 (Probably on of my favourite Productions ever - a vocal performance to die for....) Entombed - Uprising/Hollowman (Dirty and heavy as hell - this shit rocks especially Uprising!) Rammstein - Mutter (Sooo big it's unreal!)

Wiggy, I can "airdrum" through the whole Black Album as well - we could do a contest if we would ever meet - he who plays the first mistake looses. I can also play through the whole album on rythm guitars. Man, James Hetfield is a monster on the rythm guitar!!!

Air drumming to "wont get fooled again' on Who's next is MUCH more impressive, in fact it is a competative sport! (get the fill entries right!) Highly recomended!

I think the only great album they did with Burton was "Master of Puppets" which is a classic of course. In their early days I think alot of bands adapted their style and did better than they ....Testament, after Mustaine leaving Metallica I liked Mega more, Anthrax were cool at that time (and sucked big ass when they started their Hip Hop Shit!), Death Angel and so on...honestly I like the new Metallica stuff alot better than their two first albums...

Helmet - Meantime Slayer - Reign In Blood Everglade - Self Titled Dead Kennedys - Give me Convenience or give me death Scrog - Learning Compromise The Melvins - Houdini Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind Jesus Lizard - Goat Obituary - Cause of Death AC/DC - Back In Black Sleep - Volume One NOFX - Punk in Drublic Sepultura - Arise NIN - Downward Spiral I agree with Alphajerk here... The black album was not only a spit in the face of Metallica fans, but cheezy sounding with some of the sisseyest reverbs ever used on a metal record. The raw aggression of Kill Em All chews anything they've done post-burton up for lunch. |

melvins were best with ozma/gluey porch treatments. houdini was kinda a "joke" album [not the music was a joke but i heard the band made it into a joke, or was that stoner witch?] jesus lizards liar album is pretty damn good [although mine doesnt play anymore... it 'ticks' all the way through... weird] as for metallica. ride the lightening is the second best only to master of puppets. for whom the bell tolls, fade to black, creeping death, the call of ktulu... geez, how anyone could think the crapola they have put out post-cliff is beyond me. the shit is HORRIBLE. it literally went so south on and justice for all and just got worse and worse. then there is the butthole surfers. |

Some of my favourites are: Tool - Aenima or Lateralus (Dynamics... I'd almost forgotten what they were in rock! )Metallica - S&M (This is a great sounding record although there are some shit versions of their songs...) Silverchair - Neon Ballroom (It's got a great warm sound to it and Daniel Johns vocals sound lovely...) Silverchair - Diorama (Latest album produced by David Bottril has a very dark sound to it but works really well with the material) That'll do for now... |

Speaking of Pantera.... Far Beyond Driven was a massive emotional workout to listen to... And provided me with one of the best concerts ever ![]() The older metallica music is cool, but the first few records sound awful ( thank you Mr. Wagner for sorting out MOP! ) I really like thge last couple records.. " Outlaw Torn" is a great tune, and the covers album was fun to listen to as well.. Slayer, Reign in Blood, just because someone cauhgt that much agression on a record. Down - NOLA : loved this record.. Corriosion of Conformity - the Vote with a bullet record - dig it. Sepultura's cover of the Hunt and the pantera " Badge" cover on the crow (?) soundtrack Plus most of what is mentioned already.......

The band that Metallica took a couple of great songs from: Diamondhead. The songs are "Am I Evil?" and "The Prince". The Prince being a much heavier and better song. Diamondhead pulls both these tunes off way better than Metallica IMO. Metallica today is basically Bob Seger. Nobody has mentioned Voivod yet so I will. Nothingface is killer. Dimension Hatross is killer too, and more twisted than Nothingface, plus the production is more raw. After those two records, Voivod must have bowed to record co. wishes, cos they lived in the fart house from then on. Tool - Lateralus. Good sometimes great songs, but the distorted guitar sound on the album is almost always painfully shrill. Makes me spend less time listening than I would otherwise. Tinnitus inducing shit. Ministry - In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up (Live). 6 classic songs that are the perfect merge of metal and industrial. Heavy as hell. Psalm 69 is cool too. So is Jesus Built My Hotrod with Gibby Haynes. Oh yeah, and "Just One Fix". "Heartbreaker" by Led Zep. One of the heaviest ****in' songs out there. Jules, we need the head-banging smiley that has one arm raised with the devil's sign for this topic (and many others)! I've seen it! I know it exists! |
