SMART C2 Vs BUZZ SOC1.1 on ST BUSS

Hey guys,

Just got a Buzz SOC1.1 on loan at the moment! I've been trying this thing on lots of things, especially on bass and vox. I must say this unit is the BomB! Really great tight warm sound, and great bass! it does to the bottom end what a tube unit would do, but it is not tube... really nice.

So I did a little test, and compared the Buzz to the Smart C2 on the ST buss. The mix was already good so I simply run the audio through the Buzz and the C2 with very little compression going on just to compare the sonic quality of both unit. Both unit were set with slowest attack, fastest release, no gain reduction, and same output level.

Well, I'll post some sample a bit later today for you to judge, but to me the Buzz is a clear winner! Great tight and thick bottom end, and it makes the track breath. At the same level the buzz also sound louder than the C2 for some reason. It brings out the texture of the track very nicely. The C2 sounds nice, it gels the track nicelly but it doesn't add as much existement to the program as the buzz does.
I love the C2 but now I love the Buzz more! and it is cheaper as well!
I guess both unit would find a good home with different type of music. But for now congrats to Buzz

I have used both and think they are really different. The Buzz too me is very smooth and has a nice analog feel. It is great for acoustic recording and is great on the 2 buss. I would not, however, call the buzz "exciting." I think of it more as smooth. Ironically, I consider the C2 as more exciting and less smooth. I also thought the Buzz affected the high end more than the C2. Which is another reason I think they may be a great combination.

I think they are a great combo for someone to have.

I sold my Buzz and have regretted it ever since. I almost never compress grand piano, but I remember feeding my DPA 4011s through a Millenia HV3C through the Buzz and how sweet the Buzz made the sound with just a slight touch of compression.

The Buzz SOC is probably the most underrated compressor on the market.

underated

I'd go with the Dakings Fet II as the most under-rated. Humble little guys that a really a wolf in sheeps clothing...although I do love the Buzz SOC

I know what you mean, I chose the wrong word. I use it more in the sense that it brought the excitement back in the track, which was an acoustic track by the way. It definetly "smooth things out" more than an "exciting" effect like the C2. Used both together, first the buzz then the C2 as a limiter, works good this way!
