choice of preamps

hi,

this weekend i am going to record punkrock drums in a studio (not mine)

i have an ssl xlogic channel and a daking pre4 myself and i am going to borrow a cranesong flamingo and a Thermionic Earlybird 2.

what would you guys use for what pieces of the kit?

mics will probably be 57's on top and bottom snare, 421's on tom and floor, 414's for overhaeds and beta52 on kick. maybe i'll add a tlm130 outside the kick.

any suggestions?

thanx

Earlybird 2 and overheads are a combination made in heaven [pitty about the 414's... but whaddaya gonna do?... at least the Earlybird 2 will give you a fighting chance at them sounding worth a shit]. Flamingo on the snare top and the inside kik mic... the rest of it to taste [well... all of it to taste but that's where I would probably start if it was my gig... as always, YMMV].

oops.. not a huge fan of the 414's?

they have other stuff for hire in the studio too.
87's, coles ribbons, c12's, ... more luck with these?

I reckon it'll depend on the sound you're going for... though I think I'd probably recommend you check out the U-87's in cardioid aimed at the outer edge of the left and right crash cymbals with the inside center of the mic's grill screens touching as you position the mics over the center of the kit [not the center of the snare but the center of the kit]... I hope that makes sense... best of luck with it all.
