Why do the Great River 32 EQs squeak when sweeping?

I got the chance to try out a pair of these EQs after hearing much praise. My first impressions were quite positive in regards to the sound quality. After further experimentation I started running into a very bad issue. When sweeping or rocking back and forth on frequencies I encounter resonances. They can be quite loud. At first I thought this was due to inductor to inductor coupling, but I read that this EQ has an inductor free circuit design.

What's going on here? I haven't come across this sort of thing with a good EQ design before. Is the price just too good to be true with these guys? This is definitely an issue which will keep me from buying them.

The only kind of squeeking ive noticed is when using the High Pass filter at the top of its range. This did strike me as a bit odd, and possibly even a design flaw but its never really been an issue in practise as i don't use it at the top of its range anyway, its not that kind of filter.

Yes! I've encountered it on the rest of the bands though.

There are cases where I will slowly rock into a frequency and I can get a sustained ringing from this eq.

Cant say that ive ever noticed the squeeking thing happen on the eq section.

Are you getting this when your at full boost? and on which eq band(s), and at what frequency? Also what kind of sound are you putting into it? does it happen on everything.

Can try and recreate what your getting and see if it does it on our module.

It happens across all types of program, steady state and percussive alike. It can happen in boost or attenuation and is a very sharp piercing sound. It happens most often in moderate to +/- 12 boost/attenuate. I'm trying out 4 modules, and they all have this issue. I'm surprised there's been no mention of this amongst all the praise.

I just ran a synth through it and even at extreme full boost settings there's no sqeeking. It does bring out the resonance from the synth, and this gets amplified at the various frequencies that are being boosted.. but no squeeks like one the HP filter.

Can send you an audio clip if you pm your email.

Don't bother. This has been a disappointing product experience for me overall. They're being returned today. They aren't consecutive serial numbers, so I can't blame a manufacturing anomaly. I've never used a Harrison console in my life, so I can't vouch for how this EQ is supposed to function. I don't want to take a piss on anyone who owns this product, but I'm going to blame it on cheap rotary pots and call it a day. Besides, the filters were less than useful for me. I prefer much steeper filters that actually clean up octaves without disrupting much above and below the center frequency. This EQ does nothing I can't do with the rest of my arsenal.

I've had a pair for at least 2 years of heavy use and have never encountered a squealing sound like you describe. They operate like any other EQ with variable frequency sweep. In fact, I tried to make them do as you described today, boosting all bands to maximum gain and sweeping rapidly across the frequencies. No weird sounds other than the resonances being accentuated within the program material fed into it.
I find them to be very useful and great sounding. The Q's of the bands are very musical.

I have a pair, and I love them. No issues whatsoever. Sorry your experience was not good.

I've had my pair about 4 years. Never heard anything close to a squeal in the eq section, but I can get the filters to make all kinds of rude noises ... if I sweep them too fast. The GR 32's are a classy product in my opinion.
