Thriller Drum Reverb

Does anyone know what reverb was used on the Drums (Snare inpreticular) for the Michael Jackson song "Thriller" ?

It's an early ecoplate made built Jim Cunningham. The Ecoplate had a longer high frequency decay time than the standard EMT plates due to the fact that Jim used stainless steel as opposed to the cold rolled steel used by EMT.

Is there any unit out there right now that could make a comparable sound?

The closest thing would be to get an impulse response of an EMT plate for a convolution reverb (ie:Altiverb or Waves IR-1). I've never seen IRs of the Ecoplate.

Billie Jean snare? Or should I know this already?
Any other comments on any aspect of drum production on this album would be real cool! I have listened to this many times before I was ever interested in recording. I'm surprised there's never been much discussion on this album here considering it's HUUUGE!

On Billie Jean, that's also the Ecoplate. You can hear the 16th note predelay. There was (late 90's?) an article in mix mag about the recording of this song. From what I recall, an MCI 2" 16 track was used for tracking the beds, some modified Harrison console was used. SM7 on the lead vocal. I think Bruce Swedien used to sync up two analogue multitracks.

just logged on to CSR and the verbs examples sounded nice. what i couldn't find was what harware pieces these were modeled after. is there a list somewhere?

have the people that used them, liked them better than convolution IRs? i'm looking for a convincing EMT 250, and plates. thank you.

i may be wrong but i believe those were 2 X A800. i remember we used to rent one of ours out repeatedly to westlake for michael jackson sessions. we had two rooms and 3 X A800s. the third is the one that got rented out when we weren't using it. this was in the 80s.

How did they get that great snare sound on Thriller you ask? I'm pretty sure it was a tC m300 through a pultec, daisy chained to a 777.

There are 4 IRs of an ecoplate in TLSpace.

I think someone got it here.... It was a Jim Cunningham Ecoplate. It was especially made for me by Jim though. It sounded incredible!

Anyone want to know what happened to it???

When I finished "Thriller", I had to move all my gear home from Westlake Studio on Beverly Boulevard in Hollywood.... Including the two (2) Ekoplates that Jim Cunningham had built for me. I did so, and a few months later was happily building my studio at home.

There wasn't enough room in my new studio for the Ekoplates, (they are large!!!) so I built a room for them above the studio garage at home. We finished building the studio garage around them!!! In 1994, when I moved back east to Connecticut I discovered that the Ekoplates couldn't be removed, so sadly, I left them behind!!!

They are probably still there to this day!!!

Bummer!!!

Yes, Bruce, do post them. Perhaps you have some of the Allen Zentz studio at which you recorded the "Off the Wall" album?

Great to see you up here...

I must say, to this day Thriller still stands as one of the greatest sounding albums ever made. Just listened to it yesterday, and it blew away all the "modern" recordings I'd been listening to previously.

Nice to have a legend such as yourself here Bruce! Please feel free to share any other stories...
