Strenghts?

It does the short rooms and spaces really well.

Blends well in the mix.

Weaknesses?

Doesn't do the Lex thing with the modulated tails.

Complicated remote.

If you've got a 480L i would look at something else for a different flavor to compliment it.

I just picked up an R-880 and so far it's pretty cool. I'm looking for extra cards if anyone has some they want to get rid of. I seem to remember a thread where all the R-880 owners were trying to copy and trade cards. Did that ever happen ?

When it was originally released it was supposed to be its competition.

The Roland name and its klunky interface kinda squashed that idea.

I have both and sonically they are not interchangeable.

The R-880 disappears more in the mix which in some cases its whats needed and the 480L can stick out which is what's needed.

Personally for a compliment to a 480L i would look at an Eventide SP2016, and EMT 140 Plate, a Sony DPVS-77 and the ALtiverb plug with the impulses.

With these you can pretty much cover every vocal sound possible.

R880's were recently under discussion at the 3DAudio forum- you'll find some helpful info there, particularly as concerns service issues and maintenance-

I have a Roland VSR880 with VS card. And it can do dual stereo. I'm wondering. Are the R-880 and the VS effects comparable?

Two totally different animals that only coincidentally share "880" in their name.

I believe the VS stuff was some of the earlier COSM technology, fwiw.
