Not Avalon

Go with

Great River
Neve
API

This followed by a tube stage next time around

There are lots to choose from but go neve /api style first this time.

The Great River is awesome , I have one

I would like to add another like 1073 or api to complement

Something with transformers in.

Then add some tube next time.

Lots to choose from in tubes I picked up the Sebatron which are really nice and the Demeter Labs a while back too.

But I'd rather have more neve/api designs than tube designs overall and right now I have 4 channels of tube , only 2 channels of Great River, then 4 channels of RME.

I want a pair of 1073 or set of the api 3124

re

Oh yeah I miss a lot the EQ in 1073 DPA, so maybe look for some neve 1073 clone with eq on it.

The Great River can be clean, can be driven, can sound Hi Fi or can be Lo fi, Alt Rock or dark and grimey

Can do a lot of things.

It has DI and has transformers in.

Can give you clean and cool sound or be rocked out hard.

Good Connectivity

Ditto on the Great River. I have the 500 series version and love it. For another NEVE flavor the AML ez1073 is another 500 series module that has great EQ and sounds phenomenal. So, if you want to go the 500 series route, you will soon be lusting after many options to fill the box.

Any experience with Vintech 273/473? They seem like a good value and have eq's. I can't shed light from personal use, unfortunately.

Hey Germandurany, i've actually been thinking about upgrading my stock Avalon 737 tubes... do you happen to have any specific recommendations of which Mullard, Siemens & Tele tubes you like best?

-Chris

I don't want to hijack the thread but there's a reason for not going with a BAE instead of the dpa?

I'd definitely go with a BAE product that fits your needs and wallet. Their stuff is built to last and sounds stellar.
Ever tried an Avedis MA5? Might be an option if the 500 series appeals you..

Just my 0.02$,

Dear Csauter

I've only tested Mullard CV2493 valves, and noticed a change in the frequency response, more low freq, mids more defined, a little more in the output level.

Some people have recommended to me the Siemens 1960 valves because they have a very good performance, also Telefunken and Amperex valves, which are excellent and highly recommended brands (but are hard to find).

I bought four CV2493 at a very good price through a friend. The approximate cost (normal) of a good valve is $ 100 per unit or more depending of the brand and model

Here one list of compatible valves for avalon 737:

6DJ8 Siemens West Germany 1960's
6DJ8 Amperex Bugle Boy Holland "D" getter 1950's
6DJ8 Telefunken West Germany 1960's
6DJ8 Amperex Bugle Boy Holland 1960's
6DJ8 Amperex Holland 1960's and Amperex Holland Globe Logo late 1960's - mid 1970's
6DJ8 Mullard 1960's
6DJ8 Mullard 1960's (either branded Mullard or Philips or Amperex Great Britain)
6DJ8 Sylvania late 1960's - mid 1970's
6DJ8 GE USA 1960's
6922
ECC88
E88CC
CV2492 (CV : Common Valve of Mullard Manufacture)
E88CC/01
CV2493
JAN-6922
CV2492
7308
E188CC
Mullard E188cc/7308

Regards!

My Recordings/Credits

The Great River stuff is amazing and worth all the praise it gets around here. You can't go wrong with it.

The Vintech stuff is really well made, and sounds great. We have an X73i demo unit which i use quite alot and have compared it to original modules with the eq, aswell as the Chandler, GR, and DPA units. All sound very similar indeed and certainly for the money getting the EQ can make more of a difference than splitting hairs about slight differences in the sound of these preamp's.

The 274 & 473 use exactly the same preamp but the EQ is cut down but you still get the all important 12k HF boost which IMO really helps tracking with certain old school mics, like the U47 for example which loves that 12k boost.

Thanks for the info, Andrew! I can't wait to actually try them out. I'm a little late showing up to the party...

contrast to a 428?

Neve 1073 variants. No question. DPA or Vintech X73/i for sure.

I own 2 Avalon 737s and the GR pre (500 series). 99% of the time I use the Avalons. I have a very resonant/bright sounding voice so the GR is to focused/forward sounding most of the time for my tastes. The secret with the 737 is the EQ section which is very sweet and makes the 737 a very versatile channel strip. Then you have the option of putting the EQ pre/post the compressor. Of course, the 737 is despised on GS but whatever... I own both and hardly touch the GR. Heck, I`ll even sell it to you if you`re interested. Just PM.

My only surprise is that the usual Avalon denostador has not been the first to reply but the second. They are losing reflexes.
