AGFA 469 IN Otari MX80. Compatible tapes.

Hello, I have several Agfa 469 tapes to use in my Otari mx80 2". I have a lot of problems with that tapes, then I was thinking to buy another brand of tape. The only tape I can buy fast in Europe is RMG. Or I think so.

Do you know what good tape, (I would prefer RMG or other tape which is easy and fast to get in Europe) can I use without change the adjust of my tape recorder?

thanks

What tape is your machine set-up to use now? There might be an equivalent tape, but none will achieve the sound and accuracy of the tape that the machine is biased and set-up for.

Not to state the obviouse but i will, you should always check bias to new batches of tape even if its the same brand and type.
You will find that it needs to be adjusted.
With that being said, if you are trying something different you need to set the machine up for that tape.
It is not a set and forget unless you dont care about being optimized.

Thanks. It is not possible for me to calibrate my tape now. I have been using several Agfa 469 all this time because the seller of the tape gave me that tapes 4 years ago. In that moment (2008), he calibrated the Otari, but I did not it again because there are not tape repairer in the area where I live.

In that case I will follow using Agfa for the next project, but I will need to clean tapes each time.

The tape sound well, but my problem is the shedding.

Switch to RMGI SM 911 tape--also a standard bias tape like the obsolete Agfa 469. SM 911 is a +6 tape.

You will have to recalibrate your repro and play settings. Dont be afraid of it. Get a good tech to help you. You won't believe how good it will sound with modern tape.

Good luck keeping that otari running without a tech around. But so far so good...

get a test tape (brand new on ebay) and some sort of device that sends out signals (1kHz, 10 kHz) etc.
I have a little machine for it but that was a couple of hundreds to buy.
I bet there´s software that ´s good enough for rock ´n roll these days.
Now search youtube for "tape aligning". It´s really fairly simple.

You have to be a detective and search out a tech to help you. You may have to travel to find one. Check at your radio station.

Agfa is famous for shedding.
It always did.
You machine is surely in need of an alignment by now for it to be fully optimized.
It is not a set and forget type scenario.
It is not hard to learn how to do.
You need to get a hold of an mrl and you could surely find
The alignment procedure on the internet.
