Muddy Muffled RE27N/D

I recently got a RE27 the other day off ebay. It was extremely muddy and muffled and comparison to other RE27 I had. I ended up returning it still waiting for my money back. He said he checked it and there was NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. I compared it and showed samples to other people who clearly said they were different. in fact is was so muddy and muffled it was not really usable for anything. so i pretty much asked for refund for not describing it as flawed but rather very good fully working condition. i also had someone else say similar things about an re20 but the xlr connection was loose and causes buzzing noises but i could live that and possibly fix it.

Anyway what could have been wrogn with it? is there any real reason to say... rewire it to change the impedance? I heard you can do that with this type of mic. what would be the benefit to that and are these the symptoms of that?

I never owned an RE27 because the ones that I heard sounded somewhat too strident for my taste, kind of opposite from the issues you're having. Were the switches on the microphone set the same when doing your comparison?

Probably one of Rush Limbaugh's old ones, clogged with BS.
