Avalon 737 on Bass!!!

Had a session yesterday and ran the bass through an Avalon 737 to see how that sounded. I loved it!! Very nice, round, chunky, beefy, perfect tone!! Never thought it would sound that good through the 737. Maybe it was the fact that the bass player was Bad-Ass!! but it sounded really good. I recorded it flat with a bit of compression. Does anyone else use this pre for bass?

Yes, absolutely. 737sp is awesome on bass.

Georgeous detail, huge, round, clear and deep tones from the pre. Thick, present and beautiful. Even without the compressor mod (babyface), it works well on bass - and the eq really shines on bass also.

The 737 is always on my "short shortlist" as either DI or mic pre for Bass - and for other instruments voiced in the lower registers.

The 737's DI is great. If you dial in the bass settings from the manual it's instantly excellent.

If you think the DI on the 737 is cool then you really need to check out a TAB V71-DI...... really...

Sounds like some folks are trying to get the 737 back on it's feet...

It's gotten the s**t kicked out off in this forum, unfairly I may add.

Good to see that, since I also have a 737 and it gets quite a bit of use, on bass, kick, acoustic gtr and on one female R&B vocalist who prefers it over 3 other pres.

It is very useful on many things and when I need something a bit more transparent, it's the first one I go to...

It's no dog, it's just one more high end flavor in the studio...

Which is a good reason to think and listen for yourself and take these forums with a grain of salt.

Like the rest of you I have used the 737 on bass and have gotten really good results.

Are you serious?! Of course there is. I know it's a bit crap simply to dial in the presets, but on bass the EQ presets are great, just play around with the comp and bingo.

really the only time i've loved and used a 737SP on anything is with a fender jazz bass in a rock band. the compressor is perfect for it, and the EQ is semi similar to high-end bass amps, so that works too. haven't plugged a mic into one in a long time though.

Yes, I'm serious. I don't remember ever seeing any kind of manual with preset recommendations, and there isn't one on their website.

Nothing wrong with presets. The less time you have to muck around with this stufff to get a decent sound the better.

If the manual is PDF would you mind sharing?

thanks,

You have discovered what many have known for years. 737 + DI Bass = good bass sound.

You have done well Grasshopper.

Actually I have tried the 737 on another session with a different bass player and didn't really like it. It also has a lot to do with the bass player and the bass. This guy has a Custom Music Man with Bartollini pick ups.

You'd be surprised at the presets from the manual. They are very close to what you would end up dialing up and it's certainly a good starting point for inexperienced engineers.

The Distressors come with a tight little manual too, their presets for vocals, acoustic, bass etc I found them to be right on the money for the most part. A well written manual always helps when you pull the gear out of the box and want to play with it...

I track bass with the 737 all the time, but I never use any eq, or found any that could improve what I'm getting from the bass. In fact, even at mixdown I almost never eq a bass. Amy I nuts or what?

Like many people here, I love the DI and eq on the Avalon as well. I've added a little 4db at 2k, 2-3 db on the 10k shelf, a little 2db at 100hz (low-mid knob), around 3db at 60hz on the low shelf on the 737 for Bass and I'm good to go. The settings with the compressor and eq combo on the manual work good too...

In fact, if they ever come out with an Avalon standalone eq unit I'll be the first in line...

I don't understand...

If you have the unit, you gotta have the manual. The presets are towards the back, have a look...they're there.

Do you mean like the 2055 or am I missing something?

Thanks for the idea about the presets. I'm going to see what I can get starting with them!

The 737 will continue to get shit on around here, partly for the horrible compressor that Avalon threw in there. The eq is very nice and, yes, it's very good on bass. If I had to pick its strongest suit it would be exactly that - bass. However, if bass is all you're going to record with it, the 737 is not your best option. An Ampeg SVP-CL for less money is nearly untouchable as a bass preamp. Not saying you need to switch - the 737 is sweet - but if you looking to go even further, the Ampeg's the thing to do it.

Why don't you just turn it up. (and notch a little at 200)
