I have no specific experience with that mic, but I'll get the ball rolling for you.

What is your budget?

I owned a pair of Red 7s back in the 90s. To my ears, they have a rounded, softish, almost tube-like quality. I liked them some things, but I used other preamps more often.

how about a great river? input and output gain so you can cook it a bit if you want which i imagine would be nice with a tube mic.

i actually really wanna get a tube mic myself and was checking out the telefunkens. you happy with the mic itself? was also considering the manley reference and actually just noticed the $500 avantone tube mic which everyone has been raving about although i am still skeptical about a tube mic at that price point.

anyway good luck with the pre search.

-OSA API312 clone into 1176
-EM Silver into Xpressor
Vintech 473 into DBX160

that is the usual chain for vocals when we use the AK47

I don't like the preamp of Focusrite.. with my ears..I think Red 7 has comp better than preamp . I'm considering to buy one preamp about 1000$ . thanks

I like this Mic very much but when I combined this mic with RME Octamic II it's better than Red 7's preamp ..:(

I never tried it with your mic, but the BAE DMP is excellent (and give you also a killer DI!)
Another option for that price might be an Avedis MA5 with a lunchbox of some sorts (like the adesigns hr-500).. (<<<fwiw I wrote a review in the GS reviews section, below my avatat there's the link).

If you want something "cleaner" check out the Hardy M1 (1 channels should be found for that price as well).

You can't get much better than these IMO.

I hope this helps,

Cheu

In fact all this means is that it s always about the good match ... let s see that as a combo ... everybody suggested great preamps that will work for most applications ... u can t go wrong with brent averill ; great river ; hardy ; api ; vintech ... those are all top of the line preamps ... try some if u can and buy the one that enhance the most the mike for u ...

You definitely want to check out one of the Great River Electronics pre-amps... if you have some deep pockets you'll want to find a Greg Hanks BA-660.

Peace

Preamp for AK 47 for vocals

I use an telefunken AK 47 ( mark I ) for vocals with a BAE 1073mp

I love the smooth bigness of this pre.

Previously I was using an Avalon 737 which worked very very well.

Now the Avalon and BAE are different sounds, but what they have in common is that they are smooth and never harsh to my ear.

The avalon is a beautiful smooth match to the Ak 47 to my ear.

( Check it out yourself though, because you can get a used avalon for about 1000 and resell for same if you don't like it. Great thing about older gear )

The BAE is big and creamy and lush to my ear. This is my favourite for vocals.

I would have stayed with the Avalon except I need the gear running all day for sessions ( I am a Vocal Coach in Toronto ), and didn't want to be running the hot tubes all day long for singing lessons.

You can hear the AK47 with the Avalon on my voice here...

I was going for a very smooth, soothing tone..

For vocal coaching / lessons I run an AKG 535 with the BAE ( 300 ohm setting to bring down the presence peak )

I can leave these on all day ( solid state ) and there are no tubes to get hot. And it sounds really good. The BAE is a great match for the 535.

On the artists page of my Vocal Coaching site you can hear clips of Singers with the BAE and 535 AKG.

I quite like this sound and Singers are giving good feedback. It is a very clear, smooth warm sound to my ear.

It is so surprising that a 300 mic can sound this good!

These days I pull out the AK 47 and BAE for recording sessions.

Although I could very happily use the Avalon, but haven't turned it on since I got the BAE.

I hope this helps you

So true. It's all about the match. We have some high end mics and super high end pre's. Sometimes the best combos are NOT the ones you might logically think.
