The air is more of the Mic and EQing rather then the pre, but for a neutral sounding pre I would recommend the Avalon 737sp or John Hardy M1; there are a few others, but I have no personal experience. As far as mics, the 251 family, C12, C800G and Brauner VM1. Yeap, your talking about fairly expense chain.

I personally use the Elux 251, and the Sony C800G for that duty.

Good luck!

Avalon 737 is what you are after, not my first choice for vocals (i love Neves for that) but for that airy clean sound the 737 is the key, it sounds great with U87's

If you are after a really clean pre, try Millennia.

Tenor micpre

The millinnia STT-1 is great. I use it for a lot of R&B-vocals. It has two preamps built in.

1. Solidstate
2. Tube

Also has a very nice EQ + Comp
