anybody know what kind of mic Billy Joel and John Lennon used for vocals?

I ask because my singing voice is similiar to there's. I am sure they are top of the line Neuman's or something, but you never know. Thanks

Hi
in the DVD "Gimme some truth" you can see Lennon sing in a Neumann but I can't see if it's a U87 or U67.
Hope it'll help

cheers

Seb

Well, Lennon sang into a U48 when he was with the Beatles... After that, all photos I have seen had a U67 or 87.

I've aways hear that in later years Lennon had a favorite 57 that he used for all his vocals. Might just be rumor though.

Not to be general or dismissive, but it would seem to me that artists of that period would sing through whatever their engineer/producer would put in front of them.

Not to say that they weren't discriminating (as artists), but it almost seemed as though back in those days engineers put up what they thought worked best and the talent didn't argue.

Really, if Lennon was used to hearing himself with an 47 or 48 when he was with the Beatles...don't you think he would INSIST on hearing himself on those mics forever? Escpecially once he reached his "I'm John Lennon formerly of the Beatles" stage? Certainly he had an ego behind his brilliance.

their voices don't sound similar to me... as a default i'd put lennon in front of a 47 with an am16 into a sta-level and joel in front of a 67 with an rca tube into an la2a.

i'm one of 'those guys', the ones who think the pre has a bigger tonal footprint than the mic. the mic is the 'sound', the pre is the 'tone', the compressor is the 'spit', the eq is the 'polish'.

crazy ideas in my head...
