Thread Starter | Adam S3XV vs Neumann O300 vs Event Opal for dance music
Really sorry if this is doubling up with other threads, I just haven't really found anything useful in the past hour of searching the forums here.
I'm in the process of upgrading my monitoring system, and due to the lack of being able to test all these speakers, I'm going to have to make a guess as to which one's most appropriate for my situation.
Here's what I have now:
- Dynaudio BM15A + Hifi sub.
Here are the options I narrowed down for the upgrade:
- Adam sub12 + Adam S3XV
- Adam sub12 + Neumann O300
- Adam sub12 + Event Opals
Reason for changing: While I do love the Dynaudios for the fact that I can mix for hours and hours and never get ear fatigue, I always have to work REALLY hard to make things sound like they do. I know it sounds strange, but I want to be able to achieve those results (and possibly better results) with less "guesswork".
While money isn't really an issue, I will have to take into consideration that the 3 ways speakers are a fair bit more expensive than the opals.
Also, my room is fairly small (about 3m x 3m), treated as much as it can be (about $4000 worth of treatment there).
As mentioned in the title, I mostly work on dance music, but the addition of the sub in every option means that I'd be choosing the speakers for their mid / high sound.
Last thing I should mention: I am using the speakers as nearfields (the room is just too small for anything else).
Any help would be appreciated

Can't really comment on the others, but I have Adam 3XV. Only you know what you need, but I wouldn't be adding a sub, especially in a smallish room. I've come across from Adam S2A, and the 3XV is a big step up ... and down, in terms of low end.
I mainly just mix, usually rock and indie, which includes the odd electro or hybrid track, but I've never felt a need for a sub since getting the 3XV. I would at least start there, a sub is easy to add.

I have the Opals, dont know the other monitors. But what I know is that the you can work long time on the Opals without ear fatigue. And they work great for me, though I seldom do Dance music. They go deep, sub may not be needed, depends on room.
( other speakers i use: Yamaha NS 1000 m 3-way closed, B&W 802 Matrix, NHT m-20 - 2-way closed )

I can cosign on the Adam S3x-V and Adam Sub10 combo as that is what we have here. LOVE IT. Got rid of the H's and went with the V's because the V's are slightly larger and are almost the same diameter as the BM15's which i had before also. TBH though we have a White Instruments 4700 on them to tame some deficiencies in our room and room treatment. I know..I know..it's a band-aid. LOL.

Big improvement from BM15s Dennis? I'm leaning towards the Adam sub + Monitor combo as it seems to be quite used in Dance / Electro around here, but I haven't heard the O300 either so I want to get as many opinions possible.
And Lux, it's kind of weird how you mention the Opals won't give you ear fatigue, I borrowed a pair from the University I lecture at a while back and thought they weren't the easiest on the ears after an hour or so.
Thanks for the answers so far guys, much appreciated.

IMO Opals need some room to breath, a good 5-6ft from your ears (further away = smoother, in a treated room), which is about the distance they're at on a LFAC. Though at that distance your room should be treated well/better. Assuming the controls were all set flat and they were broken in, they are pretty smooth monitors.

In a room that size Unity The Rock II's will create a superb bass, tighter than you ever heard and low enough to forget about the sub. Get some in for demo. Ideally at the same time as any of the others, so you can hear how they make all the others sound like they're broken after you get used to their brutality. You want to loose the guesswork, here's your ticket. Just make sure you spend at least two days with them and don't dismiss them straight away, as at first likely you will misunderstand them. I did. I just spent a couple of days with them in my similarly sized and treated room. Ordering imminent, as soon as funds are in. I tell you, you have never heard the kick/bass relationship so clearly. Nor anything else.....lol
P.S. I had Adam S2X's in here...they sounded lumpy and slow/contorted in comparison.

Can't stress enough the fact you always should demo monitors you have on your list either in your room (if possible) or at a dealer with a demo facility fit for purpose. It can suprise you which monitors you prefer when you do that.
I use the Opals for EDM and for me in a relatively small room it works a treat, can even say they are the best investment I've done in 21 years No fatigue whatsoever here with them!
