Thread Starter | Lavry and Motu, or something else?
Hey all, I'm curious as to your take on this.
My conversion setup is a 2 ch Lavry Blue AD/DA with Msync Clock and a MOTU HD192. I am clocking to the Lavry, using its 2 ch AD for most tracks (overheads on drums), and the DA for monitoring. The HD192 is for all other drum tracks and DI guitar when I mic guitar cabs with 2 mics. I sometimes reamp if needed. I am forced to use the HD192 for inserts when I need additional hardware compression, because I am monitorying through the lavry DA. This is usually only needed for Kick, Snare, and sometimes vocals.
My question is whether I would be better off selling both converters and going with 1 unit of equivalent cost to both of my current units. This may help with the conversion integrity of my inserts and simplify my setup. I am just worried that most of my drums and guitar DIs (when I even use them) will step forward a bit while everything else will take a step back sonically. I would buy more channels of lavry conversion, but the HD192 will only accept 2ch AD/DA of external conversion, thus the dilema.
I'm grateful for opinions! Thanks!

We had Black Lion modify the HD192.
I never had any complaints after that.
Before the mod, they were a little murky, but they probably would have been fine, honestly.
We use Lynx Aurora, now, but since we are in a totally different place with all different gear, it's impossible to say if they are much better than the MOTU was.

Seamus, did you get the analog stage mod or the signature mod?

Not sure if 8 in/8 out is enough for you, but the Mytek 8x192 sounds amazing (to my ears more clear in the mids than the Lavry with a more articulate top end).

Nathan,
I was advised before to check out the mytek. It seems like a good option. Selling my motu system and lavry would probably give me around $3k, with which I could buy one of those, but the 8 in limitation would be a little scary... so I might have to wait. My budget seems to say Lynx, but I am wary of going that direction due to a couple of trustworthy opinions of dissent.

No shortage of options, depending upon what you want. RME would be my choice of cards, (I'm using the HDSPe AES, 16 channels, but they have a pile of options) Lynx a close second. Lots of converter options, again I'm using Mytek, but Lynx , Lavry, etc all available, all viable.
