Lynx Aurora 16 or what?

Hello,

I'm considering to buy an Aurora 16 + AES card.
I heard something about a firewire version instead of PCI,
does anyone know something about this?
Also, will the new apple intel g5 work with AES card?

If not the aurora 16, any suggestions? I need 16 out.

Best / Alf

To answer your first question, Lynx has not released their Firewire card yet. But it should be something you see in the future.

To answer your second question, from what I read on Apple's web site G5's do not use Intel processors. I could be wrong about this, but based upon what I saw they are still using the original processors (I believe they are Motorola). This is a pretty minute point because the G5's don't have PCI slots, they have PCIe. So either way you are screwed because Lynx doesn't make an AES16 card for the PCIe standard.

At this point the best way to use the PCIe buss is via the Apogee Symphony, http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/symphony.php. Or you could wait for Lynx to release a PCIe solution.

1) Confirming - the Lynx AES-16 can work on PCI PREVIOUS TO PCI-Express, but as of June 2006 there is not a PCI-Express version AFAIK.

2) While supplies last, you can get a refurbished Mac G5 with the older-style PCI.

In this configuration the AES-16 has worked great.

If budget allows, Apogee AD-DA 16X with Firewire card is only solution that really works. I use RME AES32 for 16 digital I/Os for various digital and analogue processing and Firewire for next 16 I/Os mainly for analogue summing and all simultaneously + 8 ch. I/Os of Firewire to Eventide H8000.
With good machine absolutely no problems. Only condition is to have good Firewire card based on PCI-e (eliminating conflicts that appeared before)
I don't know if you have some other reasons to use Mac, but in terms of capability and stability latest Dual Core Pentiums on ASUS boards are heaven for me (probably much cheaper than Macs).

a pair of Metric Halo 2882's.
$1200 ea = $2400.

24bit/96khz, firewire (chainable), intel mac compatible, bus powerable.
the combo would give you 16 preamps/di's/line-ins, 16 analog outs. 16 ch. of adat i/o, 4 channels of spdif or aes digital i/o. and 2 stereo headphone outs. and superior metering to the Aurora 16.

i own a pair of 2882's as well as the Aurora 16, and while the Aurora 16 is marginally better where conversion is concerned, i still do not hesitate to recommend the MH 2882. In fact i like the D/A on the Metric Halo so much i sold my Benchmark DAC-1 because it wasn't getting used.

just my $0.02

good luck!

i am starting to think Lynx has no plan's for a PCI-E card.

The Apogee Symphony will not work with the Aurora 16. The Symphony is designed to only communicate with the X-Symphony cards that fit into the Apogee converters. If you are looking for a PCIe solution (versus using Firewire) the symphony is going to be a great solution for you.
