There's apparently a new contender in the arena...
Aurora sidecar: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/new-p...-side-car.html
or on the aurora website: Aurora Sidecar | Aurora Audio
Even if I guess that the 5088 is more suited for mixing (due to the auxes, the modularity of the console, etc..)..
The aurora is for sure very appealing though (and has 2 more channels )

Here's the guide that we've just completed for the 5088. We will have one at the AES Show in San Francisco next month.

Aurora is cool but it's not a console. It is a sidecar, a mixer, a blender. There are no sends or returns on the box.

Came across this thread after reading up on the 5088, not that I'm in the market for something in that league...but curiosity got the better of me, seems like it would be the perfect desk for me, LOL, maybe next decade...
Strange thread though...I have to say Jim across a bit weird, I mean fidelity isn't worth it? I think the point he was making is just that it's over-priced for today's economic climate...but he went the wrong way about it. As a pianist, even if I had the money, I wouldn't spend 100k on a Steinway for myself...but I know someone who has: and it works for them as a teacher/performer. Sure you could get a vintage model for half or even a third of the price...but it's going to have a different tone (personally I prefer that sound), the action is not going to be as accurate/responsive and the maintenance is going to be at least three times as expensive per year. It's very different decision and more than likely the person making it is going to be in a very different position.

Well some guys love great quality mixer even at home, instead of expensive car (as example), even without investments return ratio calculated I don't make money of music making and still yield massive dividends (in satisfaction). Life is too short to mix on shitty consoles [text deleted by moderator] and to spend time upgrading cheap consoles to better specs.
It is great that Neve sound is available now in smaller format, although I can't go below 32 ch of that sweetness.

I looked at these small analog consoles, but I cannot imagine how it will come into use. For tracking drums you will need at least 10-12ch. And it will be good to use it for analog summing too (at least 16ch).

- Not everyone uses 10-12 channels to track drums - heck, some people don't even track drums...
- The channel count can be doubled by including stereo channel modules, so an 8-frame can in fact support up to 16 channels.
- Some people are happy to sum a handful of stems and would find 8-16 adequate.
Personally the compact format wouldn't suit my workflow, for reasons that include some of those you mentioned - but I don't assume everyone else's needs are the same as yours or mine, and I think that's largely the point of RND making the 5088 modular and configurable across a wide range of formats. |

Yes, I have outboard preamps, but I started thinking that I need 4 band tracking EQ, also compressor, so console will be more convenient than outboard gear. But for the average rock band I need at least 12 tracking channels with preamp and EQ (maybe some compressors). And for summing - I definitely need all drum tracks as a separate fader. Maybe guitars can be one stereo fader. So 9 for drums, 1 for distortion guitar, 1 for bass, 1 for vocal, 1 back vox, 1 keys : 14 - so I need at least 16ch It is impossible to get the money back in my country, considering the fact that bands maximum rate is $20/hour :( And the reason is that they make records for pleasure, not business.
