Mm, I think you're missing the point somewhat. The English Premier League has players from all all over the world, playing football. Some would argue it's the best league in the world; I'd only volunteer it's one of the best. However, the "World Cup" of football features teams from all over the world representing their countries. That, to most of the world, is what a "World" competition represents.
It was a cheap dig, but no less cheap than claiming anything worthwhile came out of the USA.

Grass always greener I guess! I don't really know anything about the initial conditions for settlers in the US, but I know a bit about the Australian settlement...if you ask me, the conditions for settlers are likely to be a hell of a lot worse than a settled country!

England is a great nation, but the inventions and accomplishments are not quite as outstanding as the United States, both are very good though. Jim didn't say Britain never contributed anything, he just said America has invented and discovered things, and its true. America admires Britain in a lot of ways, no need to be bitter.
The 2,000 year history thing is a bit inaccurate. People have lived on that island for over 2,000 years, but not the ancestors of the people who currently live there. The current population is mostly descendants of Norman's and Saxon's who actually originate from other parts of Europe. Previous to that there were the Druids and other groups, it is theorized that they fled to Ireland to escape the Norman's and Saxons who were coming from France and Germany, this was about 500 AD, so neither does England as you know it have a 2,000 plus year history. The United States also has had people living here for over 2,000 years, a rich history of native cultures and tribes, consider researching it if you are going to make outlandish claims regarding its history. Yes, i was a history major. |
Astounding. Were you tempted to stand up and sing the national anthem after writing this?
I'm well aware of your native americans....I'm not sure how much current american culture owes to them, nor how much respect has been granted to them over the years. I'm sure your history major status understands that.
I'm also well aware of the various invasions of the UK over the years - There also remains a fair amount of celtic influence in varying parts of the UK, and indeed if you were a language major, you'd be aware of how much the English language is a hybrid of latin and Celtic roots.
If you read Jim's post (and I disagree with your interpretation - in his words, the US has contributed all that is worth anything), you'll see his world starts and ends at the US borders. Some of us were just pointing out that there's more to the world than the accomplishments of a fairly young nation, as advanced as they might be.
It's not even about the UK - think of the achievements in the East - if you ask me, a lot of that dwarfs both the US and the UK. The Romans? We could go on, but it's largely irrelevant, and to be honest draws more attention than JW's post deserves.
